I plan to pick up an SQ600 this weekend to use with my L3830. What RPM should I keep the tractor at while mowing? Unless I'm reading the manual wrong, the table has 2500 listed. That just seems high.
Yep, PTO speed does seem high on tractors until you get used to it. Of course some of our members run their mowers at lower RPM, makes it quieter, and are satisfied with the job the mower does. However, the implements, and the tractors, are designed and built to work most efficiently at the rated PTO RPM. Personally, I always ran mine at the rated RPM.
Well I don't know what my manual says, but I run my L3130 at about 2800 RPMs to keep my 5' Rhino brush hog running at about 560.
Like Bird says, you just need to get used to it. Most everything else I do is at much lower RPMs than this.

Actually, you might be reading the manual wrong.
On page 47 of my manual, which covers the L3130 through the L5030, The engine speed for a L3830 with HST transmission - to obtain the 540 PTO speed rpm - the engine speed will be 2680 .
One of the feature on your dash shows the PTO speed. Usually, when I'm mowing, I keep it in this mode and yes it does seem like the tractor is screaming. Wear ear protection.
For all it may matter, loading an engine at too low an RPM is not good for it either. Anyone with a boat may be familiar with this.
That being said, I run my B6100 at less than full throttle, which in my case my tractor has to be near for PTO speed. Unless the grass is heavy, I run around 3/4 throttle ( there is no tach on my tractor) and have no problems. It uses less fuel, runs smoother, quieter, etc.
The snowblower runs near full throttle, though it still doesn't cut grass as well as the MMM. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
