Tiller RPM's for rotary tiller

Could there be any ill effects for running a rotary tiller at less than the 540 RPM's? It calls for 2,700 RPM's on my JD 4300 to run the tiller at 540 RPM's, it just seems like its really screaming there. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

As long as you don't lug the engine on the tractor, running at lower than 540 should not hurt anything. Your tiller may not produce as fluffy soil as at 540, but probably you won't be able to tell it. The tractor's operation and the performance of the tiller will tell you everything you need to know. I almost never run my tiller at full 540 rpm. Having an HST transmission lets me go as slow or fast as the soil conditions dictate.

I don't run pto speed very often usually about 1600 to 2000 for most jobs including tilling. About the only time I run full speed is to get back to the house to get a beer.

Id run it a little slower if the load isnt putting the engine near its limit.Although it may sound like its screaming,it was meant to run there all day long,dont be afraid to work it.
