Thanks for all input. I like to get all opinions. I have tried all the published tricks, but the only sure bet is that it will not shift. The serial number is 22892 or thereabouts, and I suspect it probably has the new speed deal because the pedal cushions back out, and there is some glide in the higher gears. My terrain is extremely hilly. I was not joking when I mentioned 40 degrees. I pretty much leave the machine in 4wd low range all the time. Even on my driveway. Additionally, I notice that I spend an awful amount of time on two and three wheels. The shifting is best on the flats with no load. Worse with load, and nearly impossible on the hills. Yesterday, I brought loads of gravel up my trail to fill a mud hole and I had to turn around each time to dump. I would estimate it took about 3-5 minutes to make a three point turn. It also seems like a little extra force helps to shift, but I am loath to do so because of the linkage. I have the fluid and filters on hand, and I was planniing to romp in the frozen morning and then do the deed. Perhaps I should just try the filters. What do you folks think?

I just p/u my new RTV and it shift fairly well. When it does give me some trouble I just push the shifter tight into the gear that it's already in and then step on the brake. Now give it a few seconds and head for the next gear. When it's still been a bit tight I give it a very very very little touch on the throttle and that has always work.

Was yours this hard to shift when you first bought it? The reason I ask, is mine shifted fine when I bought it. It was after some use that it became all but useless because I had to shut it off to get it out of gear.
Some people report that their RTV got better after the transmission was "broken in". At the rate mine was going, it was going to be just "broken", not "broken in". As a matter of fact, I need to adjust my emergency brake because I must have stretched the cable by pulling on it so hard trying to use it to help change gears.
If yours is like mine, additional time was only making mine worse and me madder. As much as I love the RTV, I was ready to dump it or start looking up some lemon law. I took it upon myself to change the fluid and filters as a logical step to try. Since it completely fixed it for several hours and now it is starting to get tough to shift again, I may try the filters only this time.
I still think Kubota should make people aware of this issue. If I hadn't changed the filters and fluid, Kubota would have had a warranty repair on a broken linkage at the minimum, and a destroyed transmission at worse. Since the filters and fluid completely fixed it last time, I'm not panicked about it this time; just annoyed. Ah, it appears that you need a Kubota easy slower downer thingasectomy. I think the thing that they put on the throttle to reduce the quick slow down of the early models is what is causing your problem. I wonder if you can have it removed??? I'd bet that would fix your problem!

I have 3.5-4.0 hours on mine and it has shifted acceptable the entire time. I don't see it getting worse yet. I'll admit that sometimes it's sticky but not so hard tht I would can the unit.
I sure hope it stays this way. Now mine is fresh off the truck so maybe they have done some tweaking that we don't know about.

My gut says that the damper is set too tight and keeping some preasure on the tranny even when its stopped. We had a stock one here that was doing that and a few adjustments to the damper took care of the problem.
You should not be shifting on hills or any other place where there is a load on the transmission. If there is even a minimal amount of preasure on the tranny the level is impossible to move.
If you are really hung up, contant your dealer and have them come out and fix the problem.
