I have totally ruined the threads on my mower. Could not get off a nut to change blade. Tried liquid wrench, torch, wax, cheater bar No good. Finally angle grinder: BIG mistake.

My question is the blade goes on a threaded shaft which runs through the deck to the pulley assembly. It looks like I must take of the pulley drop the shaft assembly down and I guess order a new shaft with whatever else comes with it. I checked and I believe it is a Maschio made in Italy. Came from Lowrey MFg in Boaz, Alabama.

Anybody know how to get the pulley off? I have no special tools. Can I block the blade and put a large wrench to the pulley or do I need a special tool?

Any help is appreciated

With all due respect, I'd take it to a shop and have someone take off the pulley and other special tool parts. I know from my own experience that it is easy to mess up good parts if you don't have the right tools. You'll be money ahead in the end.

Usually there is a nut on the top of the spindle that holds the pully down on the spindle. Typically a keyway to keep the pully locked onto the spindle. Remove the belt to take tension odd the pully, remove the nut and the spindle should drop down through the bearing....... and out.

This based on the designes I have seen. Without knowing more aout your mower, I am only guessing.

Might be cheaper to weld on some material and recut the threads then trying to find a new sspindle.

Did you grind the head of the bolt off? Should have used impact gun.

I have done many of these spindle replacement. If you want to save the spindle or just remove it for a new one, here is what I have done. If the bearing is frozen to the shaft, Remove the nut on top, soak the threads with a penetrating fluid for a while. Take a 2 lb brass hammer and smack the top of the spindle. If the bearing is not frozen on the shaft, remove nut and tap on the shaft with the same brass hammer, or use hard wood if no brass available. The shaft should drop out the bottom, The shaft could be bored out, and re-threaded, or just install a new spindle. The complete spindle with housing, and bearings, runs me about $80.00 for my mower. Spindle is about $35.
