I'm new to pole building. Want to build horse run in shed. It will be covered with steel on three sides, steel roof. Because it will be open, what lumber should be treated? Home Depot pro said purlons and rafters should be. Is this right?

Only the posts set into the ground need to be of treated wood. The bottom (ground level) stretcher board that you attach the wall metal to should be treated as well.

Be sure to put up kickboards on the inside walls. Rough cut hardwood is typical.

My 20 x 28 ft shed uses untreated lumber for the purlons, rafters, girts and beams. I painted all these members with exterior grade house paint mostly for looks. The posts are pressure treated 4x6 lumber.

Good luck with your project.

I'm building a little 15x24 pole style run-in shed right now. PT posts and bottom girts at the ground. Everything else is non-PT lumber.

If you're from Lansing you ought to see if there are any Amish sawmills near you. I've built lots of coops and run in sheds and have just used their rough sawn lumber. Its cheaper and a 2x4 is really 2 x4. If you can get a hold of some old utility poles they are better than any piece of treated lumber you can buy at a lumber yard. Ask the Amish for some pointers on your building. Most of em are pretty knowledgeable about outbuildings in general. If you do use rough sawn consider using 20 penny nails instead of 16 since the wood is thicker. Good luck and have fun.

Only wood that will be within 12"-18" of the ground should be pressure treated.
