Running a wallenstein 62 chipper

There are 3 used wallenstein 62x chippers in my area that are available for the price of a 42x. I have a Kubota L3200. I know the 42x is a better match for power, but can I run a 62x with my tractor? A new tractor is not an option.

I'm guessing you can but just wouldn't be able to chip the full 6" diameter the bx62 has.

Will any of the sellers let you try before you by? I am thinking with the big flywheel once you get it spinning it would work, just limit the size you feed it.

Hey Gerald,

I was wondering the same question. I have an L35 and thought the B42x to be the right power, but liked the flywheel weight of the 62. I think that if you get it up to speed and don't try to over work it would perform fine, but you would not get the full use of it.

I finally decided to go with the bx42. The bx62 is 350# heavier and my land is quite hilly. What really made up my mind was that I took a ruler and measured a 6" diameter branch. No way I'm picking up wood like that and feeding chipper all day, even if I had tractor that would really run the bx62 to its maximum. Thanks for your comments.

I run a Patu DC65 on a NH TC29D. The Patu is around 700 pounds with a flywheel over 200 pounds. I can't chip 6" material, but otherwise it runs fine. I keep my loader on and the weight and balance are great even on my very steep terrain.

I too was trying to decide between bx 42 vs. 62 last fall for my NH Boomer 3045 with 37 HP @ PTO. Was also concerned about being underpowered for bx 62, but others here recommended 62 and forked over the extra 800 bucks and got the bigger one.

No regrets 8 months later. Tractor handles easily up to 6" logs; even got greedy and went bigger. Popped the shear pin with notched 8 incher but now I know its limit. Pin replacement a piece of cake by the way.

Best thing is the larger hopper which allows insertion of multiple branches which requires less trimming.

Definitely my favorite man machine; just be careful when using it and where appropriate safety gear including face shield/helmet. It is also an excellent ballast when returning from the woods with a loader full of rounds.

Did you get the auto feed with the 62? My machine is smaller then your NH so the 42 may be the correct size. My last decision to make is the auto feed or not.

I bought a B60 for my L3540. It works very well although it will stall the tractor if fed long pieces of 4" or larger hardwood. The B62 should work even better with the extra blade.

I went with the larger chipper not for the larger diameter spec but because I knew the opening would be larger making any brush easier to feed.

This is definitely an advantage I think is worth having. It means it will pull in pieces with branches easier. A big advantage because less trimming also means fewer pieces to feed.
