Normally you need to be within 3 miles of a telephone switch, (not necessarily a central switching station). I'm 1000 yards away from a switch that is housed in a 2'x6'x8' box. I'm also 3.3 miles from a much larger central switch house. My telephone guy took it as a challenge to get me routed to the switch house and after 3 - 4 attempts he made it work. Evidently the closer switch was maxed out.
Our phone lines are old copper and I never got anyting better than 28k with dial up, we've been on DSL for 2+ years and we'd never go back. Dropping the dedicated computer line and switching ISP's made the DSL switch cheaper than dial up for us. I work in IT so I need a dedicated connection.
