Their biggest problem that is ruining them is the meth epidemic, its killing rural Americana.

This is what the City Slickers think of us

"The 25 percent of Americans who live in rural areas are poorer, older, fatter and sicker than their city neighbors. They live farther from doctors and have a harder time getting to appointments, many depending on neighbors or church volunteers if public transportation doesn't exist."

Go find you a healthy "City Kid" to put up some hay. About a 1,000 bales in a day on a hundred degree day with the humidity 98%. I think that would clear this issue up.

Yes, yes, for sure, I'm with "chh" above. Let them believe all that and perhaps they'll stay in the city. I love the farm country here just the way it is with the fine people we have scattered, . . yes "scattered" hither and yon . . as my very good neighbours. If I wanted them closer I'd move to town,..no thanks! Don't get me wrong, some like close neighbours, I don't, to each his own,..Cheers!

that's my 2 cents,

Yup, that makes two of us ... or is it three?

I think you have to take quotes like that and weigh them against the arguments for healthcare going on right now. It seems a veiled justification for the current healthcare bill. I'm not being political or taking sides, just making an observation. Notice they did not mention where people are the happiest.

Patriotic Stabilist: You are very correct. The meth epidemic is the shame of rural Texas at least. There should be more concern for how to stamp out this blight on our rural areas. Local small law enforcement has too little or no resources to fight the meth labs.

I'm very depressed because I lost a good neighbor yesterday morning. I don't know the details, but he seemed very healthy for his age and I carried a big bag of veggies to him and his wife last week. The neighbor who lives next to him bought a new NH TT75 tractor and Don used it to mow the neighbor's land and do mowing jobs all around this area. He was as proud of that tractor as if it were his own. I'll miss Don, but I know he was extremely happy and would not have lived anywhere else. Rest in peace my friend.

Thats also a pretty good description of the group that were on the Caribian cruise ship I went on last year. What sane retired person would trade the vacation style living in the country for the crazy city life just to be able to take a bus to the clinic.

Sorry to hear about your neighbor Jim.

As for the meth, read the bio on the "he##'s angels" - it's an eye opener.

Yes Jim, sorry about your neighbour-friend,...rough!

I suppose there are those that are solely dependant on public transit for such as medical appointments and pretty well are saddled to the urban life. A shame for those who would prefer the country.

I have a half hour drive to town to my doctor and as long as I am capable of driving my wife and I to medical appointments, grocery shopping etc then I am extremely lucky to be "able" to reside in "my dream farm home" and to enjoy the wondrous old fashioned farm-country neighbours, friends and that sort of old time "come and enjoy it, or leave it alone" kind of social life, . . . and still have just a 20 minute drive to the best old time "Honky-Tonk" 3 nights a week if desired.

But yes, .. fortunately, or,..UNfortunately, . . it seems Country-Living requires the independance of having a "vehicle" of some sort, . . or depending on the services of someone else to allow you the luxury.

Now that I have contemplated the matter, . . I do indeed feel mighty lucky to be "Blessed" with the good health AND the vehicle AND the Country Life !!!!!

CHEERS! . . (and may God continue to Bless us!!)(and you!!)

Good luck on finding that kid. I had a nephew from Florida visiting last week and he wanted to help bale. He was telling about going to the gym several times a week and how fit he was. 20 years younger than me (he is 30 or so) and he lasted about an hour. Finding a kid that will put down his game boy or cell phone long enough to break a sweat is tough to find.
