rural cabin insurance

Ditto what Eddiewalker said.

We built a cabin on our 132 acres here in Ohio and wanted to insure it for cost ($12,000). Our State Farm agent said its covered under our home owner’s policy in the “detached Buildings” section. Got an email reply from them stating this and saved in just in case they pull and 360 when I need the coverage.

Deaf,
I read your post to say that you built a cabin on your primary residence land. In other words, you have a house with a primary policy that sits on this same 132 acres as your cabin. If that is accurate, that is how that would work. It just falls under the other structures limits etc...
If I read your post incorrectly, and this is a completely separate parcel of land, then by all means do not only keep a copy of that note from your agent, but make a couple of copies as well.

It is somewhat easy to get liability coverage to extend from a primary policy to open land. The issues start arising when there are structures on the land. This is a state by state and company by company issue. The original post has a small cabin on it. I whole heartedly agree with those that stated be sure you have adequate liability coverage first and foremost. Especially if there are going to be any firearms used. Tree stands, equipment, water, and all the other stuff just add to the risk. There are companies that will take the risk, it may just not be the big ones.

Lance,

I kind of have a different view of insurance...insurance is required only when the value of the loss is not something I can stand...if that makes sense.

Not everyone agrees, certainly...but the premiums on that cabin will more than pay for it in a few short years.

Liability is a different issue.

I agree with Meadowlarkpond. Insurance is for those disasters that would devastate your life financially, NOT for the things that are gonna wreck your charge card balances for a month or three.

The premiums (IF you can find a willing carrier) would pay for a new cabin after less than a decade.

And, as has been already said, liability is the more important thing, because if you have a judgement go against you it could attach wages and put liens on properties. Also, having liability insurance means that the insurance company will provide the lawyers to defend their money (which means you won't have to hire them).

I agree with Mosby. If you got State Farm to put in writing that they will cover a building on a seperate property under your standard homeowners policy, I would take the email and put in a fireproof box, then put the fireproof box in a bank vault. It would shock me if they'd do that, because that is not generally how the coverage works.
