you'll always have the un-engaged one (or two) without a written agreement. I'd suggest you meet to discuss / agree on a "Driveway Maintenance Agreement" that requires each boarding property owner to contribute money for such maintenance and or repairs. find a local real estate attorney to draw up the agreement.

I live on a dirt road about a half mile from the closest paved county road. Like most of the roads in the desert, it has an easement for a future road and utilities but the property still belongs to me and is not county maintained. The road runs about 2 miles north of me where it tees into another dirt road.

I grade and maintain the 1/2 mile to the county road and occasionally drag the 1/4 mile to my next neighbor to the north.

The road north of that house is totally nonmaintained and is impassible without a 4 wheel drive if we have significant rain. Fortunately there are probably less than a dozen vehicles passing my property in a typical day.

BUT, it seems that after they traverse the obstacle course north of me and hit my maintained road they feel that they have to go 50 miles an hour.

IDIOTS.

It is easy, you just declare the road does not meet county spec's. That is what they said when we called about it. If the road does not meet specs they don't have to maintain it and they don't.

Actually, our county refuses to take on new roads even if we decide to upgrade to specs. We have other roads they DO maintain that are not anywhere near county specs. It's all about who you knew when the road was built.

We had a skinny little road with no ditches we use to use as a cut through to the waste collection facility that was county maintained. There was only two houses on the road. One if the home owners decided to block the road off and put posts in the middle of it. The county let him get away with it and just stopped maintaining that end of the road. They still maintain the other end with one house and no way for anyone else to use it.

My wife and I take long drives in the country fairly frequently. We'll be driving down some dilapidated road with broken pavement and potholes and all of a sudden come up on a stretch in front of a nice house that's perfectly paved and well maintained, then back to potholes.

We always joke that the mayor or a county councilman must live there...

Or road district manager...It isn't really a joke. It is likely true.

Our cabin is on a private road of about 10 homeowners I guess. Some have a home and some just the land. I have been taking care of the road for the last three years with my tractor when I take it up to do my driveway twice a year. I don't really care if anyone else contributes or not, I enjoy any time I get on the seat. But... it only gets done when I have time and on my schedule. No one has complained so far.

That happened in our area. Road commisioner sent county employees out and had them pave his very long driveway. Eventually it caught up to him but took getting a new county judge in and doing an audit..

We fought for several years to get our road turned over to the county. New judge excepted it. Had the ditches cleaned out.. Had some base rock brought in and seal coated it. About a month later, they had a paving crew out re-paving the main road our street butts up to. Came home from work and our street was paved :D

Hahaha, reminds me of one of my older sisters that was dating a city street worker. When he'd come to our house for lunch in the winter, he'd leave his belly blade down and plow our very long driveway and turnaround.

Several crabby women on the block that disliked my parents (see above regarding road construction ) complained to the city that we were getting our driveway plowed with tax dollars. His supervisor told the old bags it was his choice where he ate lunch and he had to make sure he didn't get stuck.

We live on a private road that is a little under a mile total. I basically maintain it. Everyone kicks in $250 a year for gravel and they often give me $100-200 a year to cover fuel. I would save I spend 16-20 hrs a year on the road between the tractor and excavator. It is heavy ditched on the sides so it drains well, I land plane and landscape rake it fairly often and it is in great shape. One of my neighbors takes care of keeping the books and ordering gravel when we need it. He is also great about coming out to help if I am cutting a downed tree or something similar. I really don't care about doing the work, I'm younger, able bodied, and we have the equipment so it is not a big deal. Figure it helps our house value living on a nice private road.
