The valves I'm rebuilding had quite a bit of rust inside the top spool cap because the rubber boots were torn and let water in over the years. Should I just wipe that out with a rag and WD40 and leave it at that, or is it important to do a better job cleaning that up? I was thinking of putting a light coat of grease on it when I reassemble them.

If you are talking about Kubota joystick valves, there were several good threads years ago about these rusting and/or freezing. Consensus was that condensation was trapped in there and it needed a small hole drilled for a vent. I think maybe Kubota might have later added vents to their design but I don稚 trust my memory that much these days. If you can稚 find those threads, you might move this thread into the Kubota owning and operating forum.

If you are talking about Kubota joystick valves, ...
These are off a boom lift, but I know what you're talking about because I had that problem with my Kubota. Those had a problem with the bottom spool cap when moisture collected in there and froze in the winter. My valve has the rust at the other end, under the top cap. I know you don't want to use grease in the bottom can if you have a detent valve because the detent won't hold. But this is the top of the valve where the joystick pivots on the end of the spool. So I'd think it would be fine to put some kind of grease in there.
