There used to be something on the market that, when applied to rust, reacted with it and created a hard black material. This effectively sealed the metal, which could then be painted. I used to have a spray can of the stuff, and I've seen it in normal liquid form for brush application. I haven't seen it for years, though, and don't remember what it was called.

Anybody still use this stuff and/or know what it is?

thanks - Jay

One brand used to be called "Extend" and was made by Wynns. Now, there's several brands, with the product usually called simply "Rust Converter..."

I've seen it in both spray on and brush/roll on types...

You should still be able to find it at a good auto parts store, though I haven't bought any in a couple of years. Gemplers and other places have it online also:

Loctite use to call it "Extend" but has renamed it to something generic like Rust Cover??? Must have had a legal problem with the Extend name.
In any case it's available at most auto parts stores and works great. Comes in a spray can and have also seen it in bottles.

Another company is POR 15. Supposed to convert / seal rust to be able to paint.

Lowe's has both. The spray cans, although easier to use, are expensive................. I recently did the battery trays in two of my fleet. Took them out, powerwashed them, and slathered it on. Works good.

BTW, the can I bought says it can cause cancer to users in California. Not sure what it does to the rest of us???????????

I've used a product called Ospho, their website here. It's a light green colored liquid, with about the consistency of water.
I've also used a generic product that was considerably cheaper from Ace Hardware. Both worked about the same.

I have used Corroseal on tractor implements. It works good. I Bought it at Sherwin-Williams.
