Rust protection of hand tools

I would also think that any of the gun sprays that are on the market would work well. I have used Remingtons Rem Oil for years on all kinds of things and find it works great. You should be able to pick it up at most sports shops.

I remember seeing an ad for a product similar to those silca packets that electronics are packed with. This product was shown placed inside a toolbox and claimed to prevent tools from rusting. Don’t have a clue what it was called or whether it’s still around.

What should I use to protect my hand tools in my garage.

We use a product called "Fluid Film"--It contains no harsh solvents and is environmentally friendly (Bees Wax base)--It is a little pricey at $14.50--but a 12 oz spray can will last for years for hand tool use---Ken Sweet

I have the same problem. I've started using paste wax. This is especially good to use on wood working tools.

Bill, "WD40" does work if you use enough of it. When you first spray it on it soaks in after about 10 minutes. Just spray it every few minutes til it quits soaking in and you have to wipe it off. After that, an occasional spray will keep your tools rust free. After all "WD40" does stand for "Water Displacement, 40th attempt", according to their website.

You can also order the Fluid Film from Country Home Products on their web site.

I use a product by Zep called Iron Clad at work. We use it to prevent rust on intricate steel parts while exposed to water. It comes in an aerosol can which allows you to vary the thickness applied. Works great, coating will stay on for months. Here is a link to the product on their web site.

Those packs are called 'desiccants'. They are supposes to absorb moisture from the air. I save them and throw one into storage tubs when I store things in my basement, like clothes or blankets.

I would still want to lubricate my hand tools with light machine oil from time to time. I like the idea of an oil rag, but is spontaneous combustion a concern with light oil?

The subject of dessicants recently came up in an online forum site that I help moderate. They are certainly useful for absorbing moisture in closed spaces, but they do need to be replaced or "renewed" from time to time...they wear out. I seem to remember that one fellow said you need to heat them up to restore them, but can't find the original post that my memory is tugging at!

It sure is for me at least! However, it's not a concern if you keep it in an airtight can or jar OR leave it spread out or hung up somewhere so that plenty of air can get to it. In other words, you want no air or plenty of air.
