From Wikipedia Phosphoric acid entry

Rust removal
Phosphoric acid may be used by direct application to rusted iron, steel tools or surfaces to convert iron(III) oxide (rust) to a water soluble phosphate compound. It is usually available as a greenish liquid, suitable for dipping (acid bath), but is more generally used as a component in a gel, commonly called naval jelly. As a thick gel, it may be applied to sloping, vertical, or even overhead surfaces. Care must be taken to avoid acid burns of the skin and especially the eyes, but the residue is easily diluted with water. When sufficiently diluted it can even be nutritious to plant life, containing the essential nutrients phosphorus and iron. It is sometimes sold under other names, such as "rust remover" or "rust killer". It should not be directly introduced into surface water such as creeks or into drains, however. After treatment, the reddish-brown iron oxide will be converted to a black iron phosphate compound coating that may be scrubbed off. Multiple applications of phosphoric acid may be required to remove all rust. The resultant black compound can provide further corrosion resistance (such protection is somewhat provided by the superficially similar Parkerizing and blued electrochemical conversion coating processes.) After application and removal of rust using phosphoric acid compounds, the metal should be oiled (if to be used bare, as in a tool) or appropriately painted, most durably by using a multiple coat process of primer, intermediate, and finish coats.

When not in use store it in a bucket of used motor oil or else don't store it outside.

You could just have them chrome plated.:D

Whatever you do, don't chrome plate them...that is so 90's. Gold plate will definately give you the BLING BLING!:D

An easy way I de-rust is to throw it in a cement mixer with a couple shovels of gravel for an hour and you are done. I have NOT tried it with a chain though, so not sure how bad it would tangle up.

I have put nylon rope in the washing machine to make it white again, it does work well but be prepared to do lots of untangling after
The longer, the worse

You could also just buy new ones from time to time when they are on sale at Harbour Freight. The factory plating ought to last a couple of years then take the old ones to the auction. The auction guys around here are crazy for chains. On a good day you could end up ahead.:D

Growing up, that used to be one of my jobs. What a fun job for a 8-9 year old :D

Anybody else have a "Favorite" chain? I have a short (10-15 foot) chain that I use all the time. Leave it on floorboard of me skidloader for easy access. My friends think I'm F'n nutz having a Favorite Chain. I'd be lost without it.

The logging chain that I keep in my truck I cleaned by dragging it behind the tractor last time I plowed. This sandy soil around here made it look just like it came out of the sad blaster. Then I just dunked it in my parkerizing tank after I finished redoing a rifle in it and parkerized it. It's a manganese phosphate finish commonly used on military weapons. That's what I work on here BTW.
Then the normal rinse and oil treatment. After it hung a couple days to dry I threw it back in the tool box where it belongs in the truck and it has never rusted again.

I only use that chain for dragging people out of ditches, or occasionaly dragging a tree to a spot where it's easier to cut up but mostly on the road. When I got good cloths on I hate grabbing a rusty chain too.
This year every time it rained I was dragging someone out of the ditch. Two cops, the UPS driver twice, fedex once and a fire truck one time. All stuck in the ditch in front of my house. They need to slow it down on the calichi road out front when it's wet.

I'm scared to buy a chain at harbor freight. How many people have bought things there that actually held up very long? I'd hate to have a chain break on me and come whipping through the back window. I lost a friend in the navy that way when one broke and hit him.

I find that leaving them rusty makes friends & neighbors less likely to borrow them.

When they're shiny & new, they have a way of leaving & not coming back.

Awhile back I got a great deal on 2 heaping pallets of chain that a local farm store had used to chain their implements up so they wouldn't get stolen.
Whenever they needed more chain, they just went into the store & got some off the sales display rolls..........I had a mix of grade 70 and grade 43 & made up a lifetime supply of chains.

(They switched to a cable system with a alarm sensor built in if cut )

Then I GAVE one new chain to every friend & relative that ever borrowed one from me & told them not to come to me if "their" chain got misplaced.

Worked perfect so far !
