RV trailer BP vs GN

That sure went bad very quickly! It can happen to bumper pulls too - my neighbor had a strong gust take his camper and Suburban both over in the NC mountains. He now won't pull any, and I mean even a 5' x 8' trailer with less than a crew cab F350.

You guys have this all wrong why choose BP or GN I just Hook the GN up first then hook the BP to that!!! You can have them both!!! :thumbsup:

I see them pulled over all the time around here for just that. According to Florida law, only commercial vehicles can utilize doubles and they have to be fifth wheel setups. Guess they overlook the fact that a dolley is a pintle hitch???
I have doubles and triples on my CDL and can't pull a camper with a trailer behind it (such as a boat or a tag vehicle) in Florida. A few people get away with it, as I have seen them heading down the interstate, but the law of averages says they will get stopped sooner or later.

Wreckers must have a special rule then? I see wreckers hauling vehicles all the time with an attached trailer.. on one the wrecker was puleing a front wheel dolley with a truck in hte dolley, and the truck had a boat behind it.

almost sounds like that's a 'tripple' to me?

PS.. this is in florida if that makes a difference.

Ahhh yes endorsed TPN on mine also I was written up at my last driving job for back a set into the dock without splitting the pair!! :ashamed: They said thats not allowed here!!

I'm not up on Florida law, but I believe in Tennessee a vehicle towing doubles can only have one ball hitch. Fifth wheel towing a pintle is okay, fifth wheel towing a bumper pull type trailer is okay. Gooseneck towing a bumper pull is not okay, nor would two bumper pulls be allowed.

I could be mistaken, as I only recall hearing that in passing one day. Never have looked into it very closely.

That is kind of my situation, as I have the endorsement for doubles and triples, but never use it, on or off the job. I haven't owned a vehicle that would tow doubles, so that was a mute point, but noticed Florida DOT's pulling over "several" either for over length or the fact that they were pulling doubles. I suspected because of the doubles and started asking around. One guy pulled two new horse trailers to the Fl/Ga line, dropped one and came back for it after delivering the first one. He said he had been caught pulling doubles, then caught trying to run around the scales (luckily only a warning) so he wasn't going to chance it again. I used to get calls from him when I was running up to our property in Ga a lot to see if I could pull one into Florida for him.
I finally asked a DOT and they told me it wasn't legal for a p/u to haul a camper with a boat behind it.

Laws vary per state. Two of my neighbors pull doubles many thousands of miles per year. One guy has a F-150 and pulls a 28' BP camper and a 3 person JetSki. The other has a Dodge 3500 SRW and pulls a 38' 5th wheel and a 18' fishing boat.

I see 2-3 doubles every weekend from May to Oct at the marina. The are half BP campers pulling boats or 5th Wheel campers pulling boats. Sometimes its a camper pulling a 12' single axle trailer with either quads or a golf cart on it plus some other camping junk.

It not a big deal up here. I have pulled doubles a few times. Once one boat behind another and once 2 stacks of 4 each of 18' car haulers for 8 trailers total. Once though 4 states and once though 3 states.

You all got me curious, so I look up the rules in my state... Idaho Legal Vehicle Width, Height, & Length

It looks to me from the link above that it doesn't matter how many trailers I'm pulling as long as the overall length of the trailers doesn't exceed 61 feet and the overall length of the total vehicle including trailers doesn't exceed 75 feet.

I've never had the desire before to hitch all of my trailers together and drive down the road. I wonder if the gooseneck coupler on my horse trailer will go down low enough to reach a ball on my flatbed trailer.

i wonder if it matters specifically on t he hitch style?

around here many people have couple kits that convert a GN trailer to have a sleave that lets it attach to a 5th wheel. IE'' it's a slip on kingpin sleave vs the GN coupler sleave.
