To the best of my knowledge the S373 and the S470 (Buck model) are identical except for the engine and rear wheels/tires - not that it applies here just as an FYI for people reading this. I'm not familiar enough with the 370 to say whether or not the bolt-up would be identical for a loader. But being around them some my gut tells me they are not exact but it shouldn't take a big leap to modify it to fit. For the cost savings, it would probably be worth it in my opinion.

Good evening,

I'm hoping that one of the great members :anyone: that have helped in the past will see this. The 4 wheel drive isn't engaging. I took the top shifter housing off and drained the hydraulic fluid, but still can't see if the fork is bent. I will need to remove more of the framing than I want to in order to get to the place where the lever enters the housing. Is there a way to see if the fork is bent without taking the support beam - really it's 3" wide cross beam about 3 deet long that runs from the front to the rear wheel and the front/rear lever sits behind it. I broke down the tractor last fall and fixed the rear PTO shaft, but everything else looked good, except a bit of rust, wear & tear.

Also, in my haste, I dropped a piece of plastic into the case - how likely will it be that it would cause horrible problems if I can't fish it out....it's about 1/2" wide, 1" long and maybe 1/8" think - it's the 1/2 end of a large syringe I was using.

Thanks
Danielle

I'd start by removing the 4wd shift lever which pops right off the side of the housing. Mine was missing the roll pin so the lever wasn't even connected - it was in 4wd when I bought it with no means to disengage it. Make sure the pin is there and inspect the fork. If it's inside the housing then you'll need to do what you stated.

Ilikeurtractor most likely has it covered. Same thing happened on both of mine. Use a telescoping stick magnet to find the roll pin or put in a new one.

Hi, I took the case apart and while looking into the case and moving the lever, there is movement down at the bottom shaft, but still can't get 4wd to engage. Is it possible that the gears on teh shaft are just not lining up - or shold I start looking up the linkage to the front to see if something on the driveshaft has come loose?
Thanks
Danielle

My next test would be to lift one of the front tires off the ground and spin it. Watch the front drive shaft and make sure it turns freely - without looking at my tractor I can't remember if any part of the driveshaft is exposed without taking off the shaft shroud.

If the gears don't line up you cannot shift the lever is how these transmissions work which can be annoying at times when you'd like to select a gear and find you need to let out the clutch to spin things up to find the alignment better.

I lifted the front end off the ground using the bucket and released the clutch - no spinning....should I do this while the tractor is off and manually spin the tires?
Thanks

This test checks the differential operation. One of the front tires needs to be on the ground, the other you spin by hand. The driveshaft should spin with the tire when you turn it. It's best if you can check the resistance on the driveshaft too while doing this and make sure it isn't "jumping" - you'll probably need the assistance of someone. If this checks out ok you're problem is most likely in the main transmission.

If the 4wd is engaged and the gearbox is in gear with the clutch released (engine off) you shouldn't be able to spin one of the front wheels (with the other securely on the ground). The above test assumes the gearbox is in neutral. There are a number of different procedures for this test but you're basically checking that nothing is stripped betwen the main gearbox and front wheels. My tractor had a front final drive gear stripped when I received it among a plethora of other mechanical issues in the transmission.

ok - I'll give it a try. :tractor: It was working fine one day, then the neighbor borrowed it and then it wasn't working:pullinghair:
