I borrowed my buddy's 3pt hitch Frontier finish mower and of course the belt broke...so I called our JD dealer and they didn't have one in stock so they had to order it and it wouldn't be in for 6 days.

I called other equipment dealers but no one could cross reference the only number I could read, nor could they get anywhere with the length and width I gave them.

So the belt comes in and it is $46, PLUS $10 S&H! And that wasn't even shipped to my house, I had to ask them if someone could drop it off at my work as a favor.

This seems inappropriate when, in my view, this is something the should stock. By the way when I got the belt, which ended up being a Woods brand, I called the Kubota dealer and they have 2 in stock.

Too bad you didn't call them first.

I did, but they couldn't cross reference the attachment, belt number I had, or the length and width of the belt. After I got a referenceable # off the new belt it was no problem.

I picked up another belt for my 62" MMM belly mower (the one that runs all the pullies) and it's around $60. Nothing is cheap these days.

Unfortunately there are shipping charges associated with everything. In most cases it's just a matter of whether it's already built into the price or not. In my business, we try to avoid shipping charges by ordering enough stock at a time to get free shipping from our suppliers. When we special order a part that cannot wait for a stock order, there is always a shipping charge from our suppliers and if it is a low profit item, we must add shipping charges to our customers invoice or loose money on the sale. In some cases when I don't stock the item, I actually suggest to my customers that they try to find the item elsewhere to avoid the high shipping costs. Some dealers will add profit on to the shipping charges. We always just charge actual shipping on the item.

Unfortunately, the high cost of oil is driving shipping costs up as well as everything else. This is going to become more and more of an issue.
