\"S\" on my forehead for sucker??

Well, do I have a big “S” (Sucker) on my forehead or is this a touchy feel good story...?

Just now went to store to get some printer paper. Walking out to car and am tossing things in back seat when a car drives up... Car contains young guy driving (mid 20’s I’d guess) and a female in passenger seat. Both look a bit unkempt and frankly, grungy.

He rolls his window down & says “Sir”...

Not being accustomed to THAT many people calling me “Sir” (I guess I’m finally getting past my boyish looks...)

I turn & acknowledge

“Uh... my mother is over there in the hospital and we’re from Johnson City (couple hours away). We came in to see her and afterwards went to a movie where we were robbed. They stabbed me here in the neck (as he points to a 4x4 sized gauze affixed to his neck) and they took all our money”

“I was uh...well...we’re from Johnson City and uh...”

So, presuming they were actually bumming money (drug?) I decided to sidestep them a touch and asked “So do you need directions on how to get back in the direction you’re wanting to go??”

“Uh..no” he says while clearly showing signs of struggling with this conversation more from a mental aspect than a physical one (ie, not under any apparent influence of anything)

“I uh...well, we got robbed last night while at the movie, they stole her purse and my wallet. We even slept in the car last night since we’re not from here. We’re almost empty on our tank of gas and haven’t eaten...I was wondering if you might have $4.00 or $5.00 you could spare for us”

I asked if they had enough gas to get home and the answer was no.

So, fearing this might be a new twist on the “will work for food” gambit, I said quite honestly, “Well, I’m on empty myself and am heading straight for the gas station, follow me”

I mulled the story over while on way to station. I didn’t really want to reduce his dignity by grilling the guy to the 3rd degree in case it’s a true story. On the other hand, didn’t want to hand cash over to someone willy nilly. Because of that, I thought I’d just put the gas in his car for him, this way he has enough to get home AND if it IS a “will work for food” scam, I’d rather get scammed giving him gas than cash for drugs.

We land at gas station and I filled my car up. I’d also decided that if the story was legit then they might also be hungry.

I filled my car then took hose over and filled their car. He got out and was interestingly quiet as he mumbled a bit on how embarrassing this was. I figured he was either a decent actor or perhaps there was some merit to his story.

He told me they just bought the car with their tax return (it did have a temporary tag in window), he worked for the utility board & I could see his service badge (or whatever...I wasn’t paying particular attention to him really) His wife/girlfriend was babbling that it was in his left side pocket blah blah blah.

None the less, I reached into my pocket and pulled out a $10.00 bill and a business card. I asked him if they’d eaten (no) so I gave him the $10.00 and my card & told him if I heard back from him that was fine and if I did not, that too, was fine.

He swore he was going to send me a cashiers check and I said it wasn’t necessary to go to THAT extreme (a regular check is fine if he did anything).

They both thanked me profusely and we all got in our cars & drove off.

Cash: $10.00
Gas: $20.00 to fill his tank

I’ve blown more for lesser reasons. Still not 100% sure about his story although he did say the police took a report and this location had numerous auto break ins at the same time yada yada yada.

Kind of makes me feel good in a cautious way as the entire time of this I was trying to keep a keen eye out for something suspicious. Never happened.

Perhaps I’ll know the ending in couple weeks if I get a check in the mail. If that happens, I’ll feel real good inside. Otherwise, I’ll just mark it up on the “attempted good deed” side.

Re: \"S\" on my forehead for sucker??

10 years in law enforcement tells me that they are probably legit since he didn't throw a fit for cash in place of you filling his tank. Even if they weren't, your "gift" of $30.00 may have kept them from robbing the next person they ran into.

2 things... You will never know if it was a scam or not. Assuming it wasn't a scam, ya did a good thing. ( If it was a scam.. ya tried to do a good thing. ).

Chalk it up to good karma either way. I'm a firm believer that good deeds do get rewarded...eventually.

Yah - sometimes you just gotta go with your gut. You did it right with the fill up vs cash. Keep us updated please.

Don't use repayment as a measure of your good deed - this sounds like a good thing done by a good person no matter the outcome.

Re: \"S\" on my forehead for sucker??

Thanks for the kind words.

I've always been one to do things like this and at one point in my life, I overheard my mother mumbling to herself that she hoped I never changed...

As I reflect, at that happenstance, I was ironically also at a gas station filling up, heading to a date. I was in a suit and tie. Some lady came to me and was a bit down that she had a flat tire and could I possibly help her...

hmmm.. so I'll be late, dirty AND sweaty...

Of course, I changed her tire and refused any payment. She was just backflips with thanks for my help... turned out she was a nurse (as was my mother) and after we talked a bit, she of course KNEW my mother.

Well... I guess you can imagine the kind of story my mother heard...

Oh... did I mention that while I was changing her tire in my suit/tie getting all sweaty & dirty that it was also RAINING /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I either have that "look" that is very approachable & make someone feel secure, or I got that "look" that says I'm easy lol /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: \"S\" on my forehead for sucker??

Maimonides, a 12th century Jewish scholar, described eight levels of charitable giving, rated from the least desirable to the most altruistic:

1. The lowest: Giving begrudgingly when asked, and making the recipient feel disgraced or embarrassed.

2. Giving cheerfully when asked, but giving too little.

3. Giving cheerfully and adequately but only after being asked.

4. Giving before being asked.

5. Giving when you do not know who is the individual benefiting, but the recipient knows your identity.

6. Giving when you know who is the individual benefiting, but the recipient does not knows your identity.

7. Giving when neither the donor nor the recipient is aware of the other's identity.

8. The Highest: Giving money, a loan, your time or whatever else it takes to enable an individual to be self-reliant.

You overshot his request for $4-$5; I think you made it pretty high up the scale in this instance!

Re: \"S\" on my forehead for sucker??

I think at various times, we all run into this kind of situation. I ran into it on the PA turnpike at 2:00AM. A couple needed to get somewhere south of Breezewood and we were at sommerset. They were asking for $5.00 to help them buy gas. I asked them if that was actually enough to get them there and they admitted that it wouldn't be. I gave them ten. Scam? Maybe, but I feel good about it anyway. The guy was in agony asking me -- or a very good actor. They wanted my address so they could mail me the money, I said to pass it on when they found someone else who needed it.

The point is, you can't dwell on what they are doing, only on what you do. That's what defines you.

You did a good thing, and both you and they have something good to say about basic human nature. That's pretty cool. It feels good to help someone and (later), it feels good to them to have had someone trust them enough to help.

Re: \"S\" on my forehead for sucker??

No way to know if it was legit, but I suspect it was.

A co-worker and I pulled up to a drug store so I could go in and get some cold medicine or something. There was a young guy (maybe 22 or 23) with the pay phone in his hand. He gave me a similar sob story about being from California, out of gas, had to sleep in his car etc. I waved him off and went in the store.

I decided to give him $5 on the chance he was legit, so when I came out I had the bill in hand. I asked him where his car was. He said it was across the street, which is a busy 6-lane city street in Dallas. There would have been plenty of pay phones over there so I wondered why he was here.

I gave him the $5 and told him I didn't believe a word of it, and congratulations for the scam. He asked me if I wanted it back and I waved him off and got in my truck. He then have me the middle finger.

My co-worker had not heard our exchange before I went into the store, but said the guy tried to get his attention through the passenger side window and my co-worker just ignored him. He went into a cursing tirade, which had I known that I would never have given him a penney and probalby would have called the cops.

This is a common scam, but I thought about my son being in that predicament and how hard it would be to convince someone you are on the level, if you really need a hand.

Re: \"S\" on my forehead for sucker??

Well it turned out better than my last attempt at a good deed. I was coming home from conn 1230 am raining, saw a ford taurus sitting side the road with a woman standing outside, being a vermonter I stopped to see if I could help with problem. She was crying and said car quit etc etc I opened hood started looking for magic fix. A guy rushes out from the woods and tries to get in my truck coincidentally locked HUH ! Aparently the car was stolen they were on the run out of gas The guy aparently was under the impression I was going to just give up the keys. SILLY people. A scuffle insued and a trooper was passing by and stopped to help. A MAGLITE is a great thing to have on roadside stops. LAST TIME I STOP for anyone
