SAE ports/fittings on a 1980 made in Japan....

Some of the ports on my Satoh (late 70's) are npt.

What were the other ones? SAE?

Thanks, downloaded the catalogs. Now I just need to figure out what the fittings are on the tractor.

That should be easy.. grab a 3/8 and 1/2 pipe plug and check the ports to see if they are npt. It they are, the plugs will snug up at least by half way in.

Now.. if they are not taper thread.. if they are ORB, then you will see a slight undercut / countersink right at the bore where the first female thread would be.. not to mention that it would be a straight cut thread.. for instance. 3/8 orb will fit a 9/16 bolt thread..

JIC fittings seal on a tapered flange, and that will be easy to determine by looking at the fittings.

( swivel and most 90' NPT fittings will also use a flange seal )

If you see soemthing that looks pipe.. but is in the 5/8 size range.. it will probably be #10 orb.. I have some jap cylinders like that.

To throw another kink into things, some of the Japanese tractors also have British standard pipe (BSP) fittings. Sometimes it is easier to just take a fitting to a Parker store or somewhere like that and let them figure it out.

Sounds messy, but it's probably what I'll do. The ones I was concerned about mostly are on the tractor itself. There's one plug where I want to install a pressure gauge, it looks like a 1/8 pipe thread plug. It's a British thread. I bought a Parker Thread Identification Kit, the British 1/8 tapered pipe thread is 28 tpi, npt is 27. That's the stuff I don't want to get messed up.
