Safe way to relieve pressure from hydro line

/ Safe way to relieve pressure from hydro line #11
FWH - - I had a problem with my BH once. I just could not get the quick connects to couple. I finally called the service department at the dealer - - he advised me to put on gloves & use the extension shaft from a 1/4 socket wrench & push into the fitting to let the fluid out, relieving pressure. I was surprised it did not come in a rush, but some did ooz out - - and that worked.
Yeah, you are supposed to move all your controls around with the machine off to relieve pressure before disconnecting.

Rather than beating on the QD poppets, I simply loosen a convenient fitting. THe trapped oil oozes out rather than spraying, and there's no potential for damage to the couplers.
Yeah, the various suggestions of pounding on the poppets made me wince too...
The "push it against something hard", if done carefully, works (must admit I've done it), but I'd rather just loosen the connection to be safe.

Either way the connection is getting cracked open: a) just to relieve pressure, or b) replacing a coupling that got dorked up because I was too impatient to do a).

That's right, but keep in mind it only works for before you've disconnected the attachment.
It often doesn't help if the attachment has been sitting for a while when cylinders settling puts pressure on the QDs. In the case of a BH that's plugged into itself, moving the controls after it's been disconnected, you can actually cause yourself that very same problem.

I tried the tapping and didn't work for me so this is what I did and will do if necessary in the future. Just loosened one of the fittings and pressure was relieved and connections clicked on easy.
