I have a 2010 F150. The attachment points for the trailer safety chain is flat steel with a slot cut in it. the distance from the edge of the plate to the slot is deeper than most hooks. The slot itself is then not that wide. Can I use a shakle or something in the slot and connect the chain to that? I pull a 7000lb horse trailer and a 5000lb flat bed.

I don't know if it's legal but I use a shackle rather than fight with the hooks.

As long as the shackle is load rated you should be fine. I just use the hook on mine and shortened the chain, however my safety chains have deep hooks that clear the slot edge. They also have that spring flap closure thing.

Hope this helps
