Safety of a HST

I have no idea how many do and how many do not have such a kill switch, but neither my 1995 B7100 nor my 1999 B2710 had one. And while I can understand their value in certain circumstances, I was glad that my tractors did not have one. I had a Cub Cadet "lawn tractor" (riding mower) that had such a switch and I disconnected it.

They are installed for a purpose..whether YOU like them or not!

Probably the reason is so that Kubota won't get sued if some idiot falls off his tractor. . .

And they are deactivated for a purpose also.

After reading these posts, thought I'd just confirm what happens with JD 3320 eHydro.

Operator can stand up or leave the tractor seat and the engine still runs. Forward reverse controls deactivate, so if not sitting on seat, tractor will not move.

FEL controls will work with operator absent from seat. Rockshaft, Rear SCV and BH controls all work with Operator absent from seat.

With PTO engaged - Operator leaves seat - engine cuts out after a few seconds - will restart if Operator sits soon enough again.

It all depends on whether the tractor has a seat saftey switch or not, as have already been said. My tractor will alow me to stand next to it and feather the HST pedal to move it to assist in attaching an implement, but that is becuse mine does NOT have a saftey switch. The ones that sputter and die or do not do anything have a saftey switch.

Mine, and I bet yours too unless its been modified, HAS a seat safety switch.
if I turn on the pto and stand up it will die immediately.
Also if I push on the pedal more than just creeping along slowly it will die imediately.

I could creep my B3030 forward or reverse while walking beside it as long as i pushed the pedel with a feather. Forget it on the GL3540, it dies right out if you are not in the seat!

Whether or not the safety switch allows you to move the tractor a little or none at all when out of the seat is dependent on the adjustment of the switch on the HST pedal. Almost all of these switches are adjustable.

As a note, many lawn tractors (ie: neighbor's John Deere) have a seat safety switch that shuts down the motor anytime you leave the seat. This shutdown happens regardless of PTO engagement or HST travel. Much different than most of our SCUTs and CUTs. I could easily understand why someone would bypass that setup.

I disconnected mine because when I pick up logs with my front forks I sometimes have to stand up to see where the fork tips are located. Then I creep forward, can't do that with the engine cutting out! It also helps to load implements but I am always very aware of safety and stand accordingly.

My biggest non-safety feature was to stomp on the big pedal the first few times I wanted to stop. After snapping my head back and forth a few times, I learned that the *brake* pedal works much better at stopping the tractor.

Sheesh!

When I creep the tractor for critical distances, I just drop it into low range. You can even creep with the parking brake on for those really critical matchups like hitching the trailer tongue of the log cart on a hill.
