This might not be politically correct as viewed by some.... But has anyone travelled from their home state (with sales tax) to a nearby state to avoid paying sales tax?

It does happen but many states have "use tax" that you are required to report and pay the tax.

OP, this subject is discussed from time to time on TBN, so you may want to just do a search for "use" tax.

If you are asking for yourself and live in Sebago, ME, the short answer is that you would be required to self-report and pay use tax on your out-of-state equipment purchase equal to your state and local sales tax.

Here's a link that explains how it works in Maine. http://www.maine.gov/revenue/salesuse/usetax/MaineUseTaxOctober2013.pdf

If you buy anything online say Amazon you are supposed to report use tax in most all states. No matter how small, it just has to be 'material'. Just saying you should report all those online sales purchases from out of state. You should. Really. Seriously. Yep.

Buying out of state and having the item shipped in is another way to avoid paying sales tax. All boils down to people not reporting "use tax".

If you take delivery in a state that has sales tax, you will have to pay them normal sales tax when you pick it up. If you have it delivered to your home, you would be liable for the taxes in your state. States are starting to target people purchasing big ticket items out of state and having them delivered to their home to evade the taxes for just this reason.

I certainly wouldn't want to tangle with any state when it comes to evading sales tax!

My purchases for the farm are ag use so I don't pay sales tax on it (Ohio). In exchange for building two fulfillment centers and a data center or two in Ohio, Amazon agreed with the state to start collecting state sales tax.

I would drive over to NH with my trailer to pick it up.
I would use a check with an address shown for me that is not in Me.
I would bring it home, and enjoy it!
Be advised: The sales tax on farm machinery IS a known problem between Vt. and Nh.
Of course, that is an issue being pushed by Vt.!
I have good friend in Me. who not long ago bought two expensive 4 wheelers in Nh.

This is a free country right? Free to travel anywhere you want. Therefore a legal transaction in any state with or without a sales tax should be of no concern of your state. Would your state want sales tax if you made a purchase in a state that does have a sales tax, it's the same thing the way I see it.
