A few
I'm looking at one. Silver model in Florida. Can anyone tell me about them? Reliability and parts support in USA mostly. I know that they are in the Deutz Lamborghini family but that's about it. I can't even search for "same" on this forum as it says it's too common of a word. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I have three of them, they have been VERY good tractors for me.

I have no idea how parts or support would be for you? I don't live anywhere Fl...

The air cooled SLH diesels are long lasting and fuel efficient with good low end torque.

Thanks Rob. I don't think the Silvers are air cooled. I'm guessing you are USA? What made you get three? Do they share a platform with other makes? Where do you get parts? I suppose I don't care as long as I can get parts in the US. It's when parts are only available in other countries that it seems to be a real pain from a shipping time and cost perspective. Is there any good resource you recomend? cheers

If it's water cooled, it's the same engine with a water jacket, they share internal parts...

I bought two of them NEW, branded as Agco's, so Agco has parts if I need them. I haven't needed anything but a pto clutch cable and a foot throttle cable, both have been very reliable for me.

My friend has one and my neighbor also has one, they are happy with theirs too...

I bought the third one used, traded it to a buddy who used it quite a bit, then traded back into it when he bought a NEW tractor. It's been a good tractor too.

Yes, other makes have bought SAME's and rebranded them too...

I have an old 1985 SAME Mercury85 4wd.
The clock stopped at 6000 hours before I bought it, and I've put 800 hours on it after finally getting a new clock a few years ago.

It's a tough machine; I've had it for 8 years and barely needed any maker-specific parts. Only brake seals [master cylinder kits were very expensive].

I've replaced the front axle pivot bushings, steering cylinder ends, steering bearings [only because someone had reassembled the front end without the shims and killed them], front end U-joints and oil seals. All those parts came from a bearing shop but for the bushings, which I made to fit after machining the housings and posts.
I rebuilt the alternator too; although it had an Italian name on it, I figured out it's actually a Bosch and parts are easy.

As you can see from my screen name, I'm not in the US.

I'm not fond of air cooled engines; they're rarely run at optimum temperature and tend to be smokey. But mine always starts easy and runs like a clock, super smooth.

SAME friends, I just found out the tractor I'm looking at has 3,700 hours, is ten years old, and was used for hay, which I have no reason to doubt. This is a 110hp tractor. I'm really out of my knowledge base on tractors of this size. Assuming it was well taken care of and not beaten to ****. When should I realistically expect to to a major overhaul of the engine and more importantly what do I budget?

Taken care of, not abused even if worked hard, it should easily go 5 to 7000 hours before needing a top end refresh, and double that to do the bottom end...

I got that from an old AGCO dealer, that had some hi hour SAME built AGCO's... He also sold Deutz and said the SAME diesels held up just as good or better than the Deutz... I considered that high praise...

That's all I got, I guess there's always exceptions, good and bad...

I've only owned the one SAME tractor, so have nothing to compare to; and like you , have no way of knowing how well it was cared for.

So do the same [haha] checks you'd do with any other machine. Look into the valve cover for extra sludge buildup [sign of insufficient oil changes], does it run smooth, smoke a lot? How does the hydraulic oil look?

I haven't had to touch the engine, but the repairs to the steering and front pivot would have been very expensive if I'd had a shop do it. Most likely they would have replaced the steering cylinder [instead of repair], etc.

So check all that you can; if you can repair those things yourself, the costs are different to if you have to pay $40 per hour + parts.
a big tractor like that is an expensive beast to buy and maintain, whichever brand you buy.
