You guys should look into galvanized trailers.

I can't believe the $2k price for sandblasting the trailer. - - - Well, i can, but it's way to much and I would replace the trailer instead. However, I have a 30+ year old equipment trailer that I've make small modifications to over the years. One year I did sandblast it and repaint it. It's a 16' equipment trailer weighing about 2,000#. I did not have the ability to turn it over at the time so I lifted it up in the air as much as I could (about 2 feet) and lay underneath it (3 ton stands in each corner) to sand blast the bottom where the rust was the worst. I should mention that I have my own sandblast equipment. If you're not doing commercial work and have lots of time, all it takes is a $15 gun a hose and lots of blast media, a compressor to run it and most importantly: a $60 air dryer. The things I've noticed:
- If you don't get all the rust out of the nooks and crannies and paint over that, you'll get to do it again sooner than later
- Let a VERY light haze of rust reform after sandblasting and coat with OSPHO. It forms an iron phosphate coating, but requires iron oxide (rust) to form the phosphate coating. Typically waiting overnight and it should be ready for Ospho.
- Use a really good primer over the Oshpo
- Use a good quality top paint
- and, yes, a galvanized trailer would be even better.

If you do sandblasting, expect the "sand" to get into everything, including places you've protected from the sand. Meaning remove your wheel hubs and cover your spindles with multiple layers of protection or remove the axles as well. Essentially all moving parts.

If I ever buy another trailer it wil be Galvanized. In this climate, it's the only way to go.

The guy that does my sandblasting charges me more for the bags used than his time. I did a 3ph sweeper and those rims last summer and probably cost me $75.00 cdn. I have to go there about half an hour away. I had another guy come out, he would charge alot and never give me a break of any kind for repeat business. I feel kind of bad. That kid has to earn a living, and the other old guy has money and is just keeping busy, winding down his life.

Soda blasting seems to be better (at least for me) for paint removal. After its cleaned, I can touch the surface and not worry about the fingerprint oil leaving rust spots. The soda washes off with plain water prior to paint and most everywhere sand would hide can be flushed out with water.

I've heard about soda blasting, (and there's walnut hulls, glass beads, etc.) but where do you get it?

Like everything else, how much do you want to spend? Eastwood and HF have setups available. I pick up
Media at my local paint store but have bought some late night from Walmart to get it done (they have arm and hammer in I think, 10 lb. bag)

A real inexpensive setup is Eastwood Blast Out of a Bucket Kit, not sure how that would work.
