Have you ever heard of the Presby system? Out of NH. The concept is a large drain pipe, 12" I think, covered in geo fabric and filter material. This is replacing mounds in our area. I will be building on a lake where we have very strict rules. Mounds have max slope angles, 12-15 %. The Presby system has no slope issues that I know of. I met with my local health Dept yesterday. I'm approved for a 4 bd rm system. Where as before, I was approved for a 1 bd rm mound! The construction is quite simple; 22'x80' bed is dug. Bottom is 'roughed up'. Six inches of sand is placed. 4 70' Presby tubes are staked in place. Tubes are covered in sand (just the tubes, not the entire pit). Area is covered in site found dirt. venting is required if the field is burried deep.

Dave Presby of Presby Environmental invented and manufactures the Enviro Septic, his website has info. I have been to his seminar. His system can be installed close to water table because it purifies the effluent with the membrane instead of using the soil to do the treatment. plowking

In my area of N.C. (north eastern) what the county calls a mound system is a regular septic system wit 12 inches of sand over it. They said that it was to push rainwater away from the septic system but I think that its main reason is so they can inspect and charge you a $50 a year fee for a non conventional system.

Interesting that you brought this up! We recently, last year, approved a 88 unit development using the Presby system. During the zoning board meeting engineers from Presby came in and explained the operation of the system and how it would handle that many units.

In my part of the world, a sand mound system is the only thing you can build, they won't approve anything else, I got quotes of $20 - 25K.................
