I have a river cabin on the Mississipi with a sand point well, I know I am in the limits of the pump for pumping water, I get a good flow, but the water has a smell of rotten eggs and or just a odd smell. it goes away after use, (weekends only). I know Iam about 19 to 21 feet down, when I droped a plumb-bob down the pipe.

any ideas of what to do for the smell. I hate the idea of going down futher, to find another vain.

some of my thoughts are spolage in the hot water heator or tank making it smell.

Septic tank location unknow, but I think it is 100 feet away.

Maybe just bad water, neighbor has same trouble.

Any thought out there

thanks

Roger

Sounds like you have found some sulphur. In this part of the US it is found at depths of 80+ft and in bed rock, when water wells are drilled.

I have a 221 foot well that is about 3 years old that gets the rotten egg smell. In my area it is a bacteria that eats the iron in the water but it goes away with use. My problem is my well has water in it that is less than 20 feet from ground level and the well pipe is 5 inch so that lets 201 feet of water stay in my well for quite a while. I also have a water softener with iron out salt to keep the rust stains out of the toilet, sinks and clothes but the softener does not seem to help the water smell or taste very much.
I have had my water tested and it tests as safe to drink but I drink a lot of bottled water.
If I want good tasting water from my well I let the water run for a while and drink it from an outside faucet. You can try to let your water run until you clear out the water standing in the well casing to see if this helps.

I have the same smell with mine. I do have a whole house filter with a carbon filter element which takes the smell away but when it returns I just change the filter and I’m good to go for about three to four weeks.

Have the water tested, and think about the possibility that the supply (pressure) tank has mildew and mold growing in it. That business of smelling bad after shutdown for a short time and then clearing up with pumping makes me think there is mold in the tank. It disappates with use, and isn't concentrated enough to notice.

To fix, fill the tank with a bleach solution and then flush it out good. Might even pour some bleach down the sand point and treat it as well. Then pump it good to flush it out.
Worth a try as its not hard to do nor expensive.

The sulphur mentioned may also be it, but check out a mold problem first.
