Go with 'ericbx1500' charcoal filters are the only known solution to me that works to get that smell out, we have a real problem with it in NC and shallow wells.

Roger,

Next time you go up to your cabin check to see if it is just your hot water that smells or if both. We run into that smell a lot and it could just be your ionizing rod in your water water/or a bad heat element.

I too have a cabin on Lake Pepin, Mississippi runs through it and I get that when one of my electric heat elements go bad. If I run the water for a while it goes away until I leave it sit again. If you have no smell coming out of your cold water lines then it more than likely is in your hot water heater.

It is your hot water heater. The anode reacts with something in your water - I have it too, but can't remeber what the mineral is - maganese maybe? Anyhow, you can replace the anode with something else that won't react. Also, flush your hot water heater - this should be done regularly anyway, but most folks don't. Whatever is stinky seems to collect on the bottom and can be douched out - at least my conditions improve after I flush my WH. Connect a hose to the drain on the bottom and blast it out for 5 minutes or so. I also like to put bleach in my filter housing, run that into the water heater, then flush it out after sitting an hour or so - in that case, make sure the water is bleach-free before stopping. Also, if it's electric, turn it off before flushing - the cold running water can cause an overload.
