I had it sent to me by a retired American Airlines pilot. I have no idea where he got it, but he knows half the pilots in the known unverse, so it could have come from the military or from a news service like CNN. Sorry I don't know more, I just thought it was a neat photo about the kinds of risks our troops encounter.

Do you think there could still be a single coal much less a flame in that fire pit by the time he touched down.

Bill, based on your link, I guess I should have changed my title to Afghani instead of Iraqi. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I'm not a pilot, but that's the first thing I thought of when I saw the picture. And, I'm pretty sure those helo's are **** near antiques

Re: Santa\'s Sleigh...Iraqi model

I searched through my archives (an old shoebox /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif) and found a photo from my last cruise in the US Navy aboard the guided missile cruiser, USS Gridley (1980-'81). The attached photo shows a helicopter hovering over the fantail (rear end) of the cruiser during an underway replenishment. The top of the missile launcher is about 10' off the deck and I've seen these pilots hover down to about 5' over the deck of a moving ship which was rolling and pitching while making 7-10 knots through the water.

I believe the helo is called a Sea Knight and was the Navy's workhorse for delivering supplies and personnel between ships in the taskforce. On Sunday, they would bring a Chaplain over for church services and we referred to the helicopter as the "holy helo." /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I think the US Navy helo pilots have nerves of steel and my hat is off to them for taking the risks they took to keep food in our galley and mail in our post office. Having an internet connection or even a general purpose personal computer aboard ship was unheard of. Wow! How times have changed. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Are personal computers with internet/email capability available to the average sailor onboard US ships? Seems like a security nightmare to me. Even with no intentional espionage it seems like a lot of real time information would get out. How do they control that?
