I usually take a salad for lunch to work ...a few different kinds of lettuce, some cabbage, carrots, radish, celery....and I put a topper on, a variety of cheeses, sometimes leftover chili or lentils, maybe some leftover pasta..

A few months ago I decided to try some sardines as a topper and discovered....dang...they're good. I'm not setting any trends at work... most wrinkle their nose when they see what I'm eating and the smell if you get close is fragrant fishy. :licking:

The local grocer carries a number of different brands of sardines. I'm liking the King Oscar brand in olive oil right now. There's another brand from Morocco that's pretty good also in olive oil.

Anyone else like sardines? What do you have them with? what kind to you buy?

Lately I've been eating a can of sardines with crackers instead of a sandwich when I'm working nights. Makes a decent meal without eating too much. Don't have to worry about having too much company while you're eating. Local stores carry the Beachcliff, Brunswick and King Oscar brands. The King Oscar Kippered herring is pretty good.

Love sardines. I even had them on pizza - pretty good. Also similar in taste can be smoked mackerel.

You can mix sardines with chopped onion and margarine to make decent spread, options are basically limitless.

There's no way my wife will eat a sardine; even hates to smell them. So I don't have them very often, but I do like them with saltines. A little cheese and onion goes good with them, too. 46-50 years ago, when I worked 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m., I used to carry them to work. But I've never tried using sardines any way except just eating them right out of the can with some crackers.

Sardines? I thought you were supposed to open the can, empty and drain off the liquid and then eat the can with a saltine chaser!:laughing: Have I been doing it wrong?

We feed our dog sardines for a treat... :drool: Might have to manup and try them... that is if he lets me :eek:

I love them to but have you guys looked to see how much salt and fat in one can.I'm off sodium since my blood pressure went up.Off the salt now and pressure coming back down and even lost a few pounds

Yes, sardines (and especially anchovies) fall into the category of "What is good is not good for you".

I like them but don't think of them much. My wife hates the smell of them so I usually eat them when I'm alone....or maybe alone. If I'm anywhere near the barn the barn cats keep me company!:D I've found that if you're trying to get rid of a few or.....I mean relocate a skunk of two with a live trap, an empty sardine or tuna can will bring 'em in. Of course, right along with a few barn cats or grinners (Opossum for you slickers) or a 'coon (Racoon):D:thumbsup:

Yes, sardines (and especially anchovies) fall into the category of "What is good is not good for you".

If you eat the ones packed in water you really lower the % of fat and sodium. They're high in calcium and protein. The oil doesn't add much to the taste.

I love Sardines. Like Bird and others, I open a full can, drain off most of the olive oil, and eat with crackers. Yum!

I buy various brands, but do like the Trader Joe's Moroccan Sardines in Olive Oil.

The calories for one can is 220.

The good point about this fat is that is almost all Omega 3 oils, the GOOD kind. If you study up on nutrition, you'll see that the typical American diet is way too high in Omega 6 oils, and low in Omega 3.

Also, the sodium content is fine for one meal, at 280 mg per can. The adult allowance for sodium is around 2,200 mg per day. So this as a lunch would be fine. Also note, NO cholesterol. And, NO sugar.

The final good point about sardines is that as a small fish, they are caught and consumed before they can absorb many contaminants, a problem with larger fish that grow to larger size before catch.

I always feel full, satisfied and happy after eating my sardines lunch.

For what it's worth...I wasn't too fond of sardines either but found that not all sardines are equal. I'm only a few months into this but some brand processes are different. Again...not sure what those differences are but the result is a different taste. Also, some brands use larger sardines with bigger bones which may not be so desirable. The King Oscars so far are tops IMO. And from what I'm reading, they're pretty good for you.

I drain the olive oil off as much as I can before I put them on the salad. The contrasting textures of the salad and sardines is good.

Allot of folks, the wife included (not sure why since she likes all manner of canned herring), prefer sardines in tomato or mustard sauce. It's good that way to but I prefer down and dirty saaarrrdeeenes.

Most anchovies are salty. My BP is borderline and so I'm trying to keep the sodium in my diet down. I like them though so once in a while maybe...Thanks for the tip on the kippers. I'll give them a try.

I think the last sardines I ever had were the ones my mother fed us as kids. I used to love them because they were good and you didn't have to worry about the bones, just crunchy and delicious. My mother told us so many horror stories about people eating fish bones that I was scared to death anytime I ate fish and found a bone. As soon as I found a bone, my appetite evaporated. All I could think of was choking or having that fish bone sticking out the side of my stomach.:eek: :rolleyes:

I don't know why I wasn't thinking well enough to realize the empty can would do the job instead of wasting good sardines,:ashamed: but many years ago, I used sardines to trap some skunks and more recently to trap a stray cat. It's the best bait I know of for that purpose.
