Satellite TV - New customer vs existing customer

I will say that DirecTV will allow you to add on one free receiver annually as an incentive to stay.

Are you saying they will give you the additional reciever for free? Or are you saying they will waive the $5 per month fee for programming on the additional reciever? Just curious.

My daughter was a DirecTV customer for several years. When a recent wind storm damaged their antenna, she called to have it replaced. They want $79 to have someone come out and replace it. They seemed unwilling to offer her any other arrangement. So she called the local cable provider. Because she was a DirecTV customer, they installed digital cable, 3 recievers, and free HBO for about $10 a month less than DirecTV and free install. When she called DirecTV to cancel, they bent over backwards to beat the cable offer. My daughters response was "if you offered me that two hours ago, I would still be a DirecTV customer".

I've had both DirecTV (actually using the Pegasus provider) and now DishNetwork. Actually like the DirecTV service a little bit better, I think I like their channel layout better. We really switched for 2 reasons. Pegasucks was ripping us off. Charging us more for the same thing that a DirecTV customer got - we couldn't get DirecTV directly because we were rural - what the ??*(* that is the main point of satellite TV. Second reason was the way Dish does their receivers. We have 2 receivers each having 2 tuners in them. This can be used for PIP or, as we did, run a cable to another room and have TV in that room controlled by a UHF remote control. We now have TV in 5 rooms and only pay for 2 receivers. (OK, I cheat and send the signal from our bedroom to the kitchen via an X10 wireless system) You could easily split the cable running to the slave TV and run it to multiple rooms just being careful as to not split it so much as to degrade the receiver. All of this equipment is leased and it was a free install - though I ended up helping the guy and even loaned him tools to do the job and make it easier. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

RE: Pegasus

They are no longer invloved with DirecTv. All Pegasus customers were transfered over and became DirecTv customers over a year ago.

Yeah, I know, but I couldn't stand it any longer and bailed before the changeover began. So far I've seen no reason to switch back though. I do have one receiver that is starting to act up, even though it is leased I bet they will try to make us pay the repair bill or take out the maintenance. That may be enough to switch back if they try.

Hi, Jim.

Second reason was the way Dish does their receivers. We have 2 receivers each having 2 tuners in them. This can be used for PIP or, as we did, run a cable to another room and have TV in that room controlled by a UHF remote control.

I have called both DirecTv and Dish to see how each compares. Each has a limit on the numbers and types of receivers they will lease. However, this receiver sharing by Dish is a mandatory thing. On the phone, I tell the lil' darlin' at Dish that I want (1) an HD DVR, (2) an HD receiver and (3) a standard def. DVR. 3 pieces of equipment. She says I can't do that because I can share the 2 tuners in the HD DVR with the 3rd TV. I tell her that I don't want to share, that I want a seperate, standard def. DVR for the 3rd TV. No can do. She tells me that if I want a stand alone receiver for the 3rd TV, I'll have to contact a reseller and buy one.

So, I call some satellite installer in a town close by and told him what I wanted. "Not a problem" he says. So I ask, how much for the standard def DVR? "Nothing", he replies, "That one is free". He has no idea why lil' darlin' at Dish HQ couldn't put that package together.

Quite honestly, I'm fed up with the business models at both places. Neither will lease more than 1 HD DVR per household. To my way of thinking, if I had 4 or 5 HD televisions (which I do not) and wanted the features of a HD DVR on each one, as long as I want to pony-up the $ for it, I don't see why they would have a problem with it. Now, you can go buy the HD DVRs from some resellers, however, traditional outlets like Circuit City and Best Buy only sell "leased units" (what an oxymoron). And, with DirecTV, I've read on the Tivo Forum that when you try to activate a new receiver that you truly bought (not leased), you have to go through several folks to make sure they have it in their records that you own it, that it is not leased so they won't lay claim to it once you deactivate your service.

So, right now as I see it, DirecTV will cost me about $150 more in up front fees to upgrade to HD the way I want it (provided that the Dish installer knew what he was talking about). Programming fees for DirecTV are about $17 per month LESS than Dish for what I see as comparable programming packages. However, Dish does have a much more robust HD listing than DirecTV so you are not really comparing apples to apples on this.

As a current DirecTV customer, I have 2 functional standard def DVRs that i can use as I want to. And, years ago, I bought the lifetime subscription to TIVO and they will still honor that, so no monthly TIVO fees. And, if I go through my local phone provider, I can get an additional $10 per month discount.

So, as I type this up, it seems like my monthly savings with DirecTV will quickly erode the $150 upfront premium I will have to pay for the equipment upgrade. I'll double check my figures and if this is right, looks like I may stay with DirecTV.

I had a similiar situation as Rozzets daughter. I wanted to upgrade though. I was a Dish customer before they were even Dish, something else back then, almost 10 years. I called Dish to see what they would offer me. Nothing! I called DirecTV and they had a heck of a package compared to what I had been getting. I called Dish back and told them I was gonna cancel if they didn't offer something close. They told me no deals with existing customers. DirecTV sent the installer and I have it now. Called Dish to cancel service and they offered a super deal. To late I say, your dish is laying in my burn pile right now. Begged and pleaded to keep my service. Why not just a little sooner, I would have loved to keep them as I like the channel layout better.

Buckle,

Free receiver. You still pay the monthly charges. You have to call a rep, I don't remember seeing it on their website. They may even give you a free DirecTivo /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
