Good question. Nat'l Park + tree huggers = NO FUEL in this Park due to previous, legal, fueling stations that had, or were alledged to have, leaking tanks ... combined with a Park Service notion that ppl w/ machines = BAD. Therefore, all services are going to be moved down the mountain (out of the Park) ... fuel was first. ... a boon to downdtream businesses /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I was not trying to implicate the JD dealer, or that off road fuel is bad, just pointing out that there's no other place to get it so I assumed that it would sell a lot of off road diesel so should be fresh and checked for water regularly.
Homebrew, I also thought there would be more savings than 9cents per gallon, I'm sure there is more than that in taxes on the on road fuel.

The offroad pump at the country store near me says "High Sulfur" on it and the tractors that burn it smell like the old high sulfur diesel. Some places use the same diesel and dye it others apparently have real offroad diesel. Yes the main price difference is the road taxes you are not paying with the offroad diesel.

There is also the problem of shipping Diesel and gasoline thru the same pipes. The fuel buffer area between gas and diesel is sold and is not really diesel or gasoline but a mixture of both. Someone sells this stuff for something somewhere /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

To my knowledge, the Hi Sulfer stuff went away several years ago. In some cases it may still be there, but I dont see how it would be adventageous for a refiner to make both... Maybe its a small supplier? I would not run this in a truck. The hi sulfer content could swell o-rings and cause stiction issues, leading to pump and injector dammage.

Sorry Milkman...I had to laugh when I read your story...not at the problems you had, but with the irony of it, which it seems you were alluding to. This is the male version of "honey..look at all the money I saved us at (name the sale)" /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sometimes the distributer, store, will have it in a bulk barrel that he doesnt sell much of. Or maybe you have a guy that has a 200gal tank he got for a good price and he figures he has fuel for a long time, etc......
These above ground tanks are the worst because they promote condensation inside then they can rust inside and pass it on to the vehicle. Like I said, its how its handled, the best fuel comes from a consistant source, a place that goes through alot of it. I'd be leery of keeping more than a 5gal jug full here at the house, but I only have 2ac here and some roads and food plots on a 200ac peice, so my uses doesnt require alot of fuel.

Kentucky state tax is approx $0.16/gal.. Federal tax is $0.244/gal... so you didnt save a lot.. The reason the cost is so high is that the less fuel that someone sells like this (and kero) the higher the price goes to make the same profit margin..

If you check with a local oil company they will probably have off-road/non-taxed fuel that they will sell you for a lot less cost..

I have a 275 gallon above ground tank in which I store off-road high-sulfur diesel. It is delivered to me by the Chevron jobber's tanker. I last paid $1.955 per gallon in January 05. Need another delivery in a couple of weeks and expect to pay a lot more. . . .

The tank provides fuel for my generator (direct connection) and tractor (via toggle pump). Condensation is a problem which will overwhelm normal additives, so every couple of weeks I drain off the water from a cock on the bottom of the tank. Get maybe a quarter inch of water and a little particulate matter in a bell jar. If you let the water accumulate you WILL get creepy-crawlies growing in the water, chowing down on the fuel, and excreting a slime which will clog up fuel filters. (Don't ask me how I know). A great additive which will prevent this, or in the worst case destroy existing slime, is "KILLEM." I also treat the fuel with PS additive to boost the cetane and keep it reasonably fresh.

Is my system worth the time and trouble? For me, yes. No more messing around with 55 gallon drums and jerry cans. But clearly it's not suitable for everyone.
