According to the wildlife guy at church what we are seeing in Western KY are fish Eagles and not baldies. Says they call them fish buzzards cause they mainly eat dead fish. Guess that one we saw was a possum eagle.
Several years ago I went with a class of my wife's to a nature pen where a local guy kept and nursed injured animals. He was approved to do so by the state. His wife was the guide. She started hooting at this HUGE owl in a cage and it started hooting back. She explained that it was her buddy and always responded to her. She put a very thick padded elbow length leather glove on her left hand and reached in the cage to get him. He jumped over to her unprotected right arm and she dropped him. She put her right hand behind her back and got the owl on her left. I could see blood dripping as she talked to the kids. After they moved to the next cage and she put Hooter up I looked at her hand. The main talon had gone in at the base of her thumb and came out the back side.
Do not tick off an owl.
