Saw Chain Sharpener

   / Saw Chain Sharpener #51
I've had one of the HF chainsaw sharperners for awhile now. At first, I had trouble getting a good edge to the teeth of my blades. They just wouldn't stay sharp for very long.

Then I paid more attention to each tooth when I cut them. The sharperner body is plastic and it's not very precise. You have to make sure the wheel hits your cutting tooth just right to sharpen it. If you look close and pay attention, it's pretty easy. If you just touch the blade with the grinder, it won't be consistant.

I think that was my problem. Once I applied preasure to the grinder just right, I started getting perfect alignment every time and it became an easy task to sharpen my chains.

I have four chains and bring them all out when I cut wood. Usualy a chain willl last a day to several days, but it all depends on what I'm cutting and how much dirt is on the tree. When it starts to get dull, I just swap in a new chain. It takes a few minutes, but having a sharp chain sure is nice!!!

I also found the directions to be less than ideal. In fact, I couldn't figure out how to sharpen the chain from the directions, just how to put it together. After a little thought, I figured it out, but it took awhile to get it to work right.

Yeah, those non-existent directions. I took the chain clamp apart twice trying to get it to tighten up before I discovered that neat, quick tension adjustment (pull out on handle and adjust a notch or two).

just got a HF catalog and it has on the front page the sharpener.
stock number 93213-8 BCB
for 29.99 dollars.
Of cource I punch in the number on the HF site and get a different higher price.
Very strange how they do it, but Ive seen that with other items also.
Im thinking maybe if you were to place the order if the comp would bring up the lower correct price?
This cat just came this week, but no coupon on the back for either 5 dollars , or free shipping like they used to have.
Good luck,Let us know how you make out.

Look for the link to "ordering from a printed catalog" on the left side of the screen. Following that should get you to the catalog advertised discount price.

I also have a HF elctric sharpener. They rolled into town a few weelks ago and I bought the sharpener for $29.95 and a Auto darkening welding helmet for the same price. Both work fine and don't know how I got along without them this long...

I called and hopefully got the price adjusted to 29 - we'll see.

I'm sure I'll have questions on how to use it once I get it that I'll be putting up. HFs instructions are barely more than a parts list (actually Kubotas aren't all that different!)

Just bought a new chain at lowes too. Figure having 3 chains around will be nice, and it will let me go a bit longer between sharpenings.

If you can do it, I recommend mounting it about chest height. Lets you see directly what is happening without stooping over to peer at it on the bench. Mine is mounted to one of the lally columns in the shop. Another thing is lighting. I found it incredibly difficult to get light where it is needed. The solution was one of those swing arm desk lights mounted upside down on the ceiling. I played with several different types of lights including trouble ones. They all worked but all of them required holding while using. Does take a chunk of wire to hold the arm up due to the weird geography but I can now 'see without stooping and see with light where it is needed'.

Eddie,
I have the same saw and the same problems you used to have. Can you explain your solution and steps you take to do it right in detail?
Thanks.
