So do you know what happened to your friend regarding the John Deere gator? Was it a scam? I have managed to get the website shutdown that scammed me. A lot of agencies are involved in trying to catch these scabs and put them in jail.
The best way to avoid scams like that is email them (not from your regular account though! Make an alternate one) and ask them when you can come look at whatever it is they're selling. Don't ever give out any personal info though. Better yet, don't mess with any add that doesn't list a pone number for you to call.

Their answer will always be "It has already been delivered to the shipper ( or consignment company ), and can't be inspected. You will have 10 days after you accept delivery to return it at our expense if not as advertised" (ahahahaaaaa.......sure you will....ahahahaaa)
Not be able to actually place hands on an item is the KEY indicator you're about to kiss your money goodbye. In the case of my buddy and his gator purchase, the machine was supposed to be in a town just about 30-40 minutes away. WHO wouldn't go look at something they were getting ready to send 5k on when it was that close ? I'd say "Deduct the shipping. I'll bring a trailer with me to load it on"....then watch them back peddle.
