Sorry Bird, If I seemed to make the impression that just TBN. was giving a bad rap of CL.I agree though the word of mouth is the best way to combat these indviduals.

I totally agree with you . I have made many purchases from both eBay and Craigs list and NEVER been ripped off. They bot do millions of transactions and are bound to have a few bad ones. I'm not sure why folks on this list like to bad mouth both servitude.

the sad thing is people fall for this all the time. I don't think a week goes by that someone does not come in and claim they can buy XYZ tractor for $3800 online. We had one guy who actually sent money out despite our warnings.

As a local business owner will tell you it is not just on ebay or craigslist or just tractors; they are everywhere in all industry, even the medical field. You normally can spot the ones in an industry you know unless you get greedy yourself. The idea of a great or special deal is how they hook most they do.

I thought the same thing when I read it...also this was "supposed" to be someone in Pasco Co. FL which is about as far away from those that speak the queen's english as you can get...

I did see another similar scam on the Atlanta CL...this time it was a Kubota... now I realize many of these (scam) ads are getting flagged imediately for being questionable...but it only has to be there for a few minutes to work for them...
I also now realize that I had seen several other "scam" ads on CL...always just passed them off as eing too good to be true that someone else got...(unfortunately)

I saw one of these great deals on Craigs list a few weeks ago and it sounded fishy. The angry devorced wife sort of thing. I did not imediately point out where I was from and I just so happened to have lived close to the stated city. I then acted interested and got the same "it is already crated and waiting for shipping" story. I then told the suspected scammer that my BIL works in the shipping buisness and that would work out great and I would bring my own truck and cash just name the date and time. It was at that point that all of the E-mails stopped.Remember if it sound to good to be true it probably is. Always ask for a bill of sale, a theif will balk at giving you one of those. This sorta weeds out the thieves.

Don't you mean craigslist? It is a web site with what is often "local" ads of all sorts.
You might find someone here in your neighborhood. There is a place on here by region.

Besides the to good to be true price, it's the language that sends up the red flag, I can spot them imediatly as soon as you get past the legitimate description of the tractor, that they obviously just copied verbatum from an ad. They seem to think it necessary to ad content in language which is right out of those "I am royal prince from country of trinadingo, may I store my great wealth in your bank account" scams.
They'd do a much better job of scamming people if they would just hire competent proof readers.

That same scam is in my local Craigslist today. It even has four pictures of it with a loader and a backhoe!!!!

I don't know if it's for real or not, but there are some websites where a person carries on and on with some of these scammers. Mostly people from Nigeria, but other areas as well. It's a fun read, but just a little to perfect for me to be convinced that it's not really just some creative writing. Either way, I enjoyed reading a few of them and how he supposedly turn the tables on them.

While watching a piece on the Caley/Casey Anthony case in Orlando they mentioned how George Anthony fell prey to the Nigerian scammers. Seems he was in a bit of a financial jam a few years back and happened to get the e-mail from the "Prince" requesting money. Kind of struck me funny as he used to be a cop somewhere in Ohio, didn't think anyone was quite so naive. He certainly has bigger problems these days.

I have been on the recieving end of an email scam since 2/24/09 dealing with some hay for sale on a web-site. He left a phone #, which was disconnected, used a name that could be Googled all over the US, and left info to do with the check "when it arrives" including sending part of the $ to his trucker when they arrive. I use a PO Box which is where he said he would UPS a check to (UPS doesn't deliver to PO Boxes), then he said he would Fed Ex it (Fed Ex doesn't deliver to P O Boxes), now he is getting frustrated thinking I will sell this hay. I have contacted my local police, they said their hands are tied, talked to my bank- waiting for the conterfeit check- they recommended contacting the FTC with the emails that we have traded back and forth. That is my plan hoping they become aware of some of these scams and can intervein in the future. The scammer slipped and left a foreign name 1x, not the name he has been using. He also uses 2 different emails to contact me.
