While at the local big box home improvement store this morning, I picked up some electrical items....they were hanging on a hook with a $2.49 tag and the price sticker on them was $1.39. When I went to the checkout counter the register scanner rang them up at $2.99. After paying for the items I took a detour to the customer service counter and pointed out the error, and that I wanted a refund of the overcharge. Their employee was willing to refund me the amount of $3.29 to reflect my overpayment but balked when I told her I was due an additional $5. After the manager was summoned he told the employee to pay me $5 additional, he said the term his store used is: "Michigan Bounty".

According to the law here anyone who is overcharged by a checkout scanner is entitled to a refund if they bring it to the attention of the merchant within 48 hours. In addition to getting a refund of the overcharge, a consumer is also given an additional refund of 10 times the amount overcharged, with a minimum of $1 and a maximum of $5.

I'm curious if other states have a policy like Michigan does.

I have never heard of anything like this, but it sure sounds like a great idea. I wish Mississippi would adopt a law like that /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif!

I do beleive NY has the same policy. But i think counties are allowed to set there own policy, although i am not sure about that.

One of the grocery stores we use has a practice of giving you any item that scans wrong for free. It's a game Wifey loves to play.

One time I bought a 50 pound bag of the wrong dog food. When I went back to trade it for the right stuff, I saw the wrong one was actually supposed to be on sale, but scanned wrong. When I called it to their attention, I was refunded the entire price paid for the wrong bag, which was a few bucks more than what I really wanted. End result was a bag of the right food and more money than I started with...............chim

If you know it's wrong, which you probably won't.
I can't can't remember the price of every thing in the grocery cart and I'm not going to write it all down on a list.
This is what they are banking on so what if a few customers catch it they've made an enough extra off the others they come out ahead in the game.

Worst thing they ever did was take the price tags off the items !
