JD790
Hey Guys, I have had my JD790 for 11 months, and only have 30 hours on it. Should I go ahead and do the first maint on it now, or wait till I have the 50 hours recommended?

I have a JD4110 which I changed the engine oil & filter at 25 hrs. and then again at 50 hrs. Also at 50 hrs I changed the transmission fluid and the filters. You do what you think is best. You will live with the results. I vote yes on the engine oil change. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have a 4310 with 500 hrs in 18 months. I did the 50 hr. maintenance after the first week. The engine oil and filter get changed every 3 months or 50 hours. I grease the tractor, loader and backhoe much earlier than the manual suggests. For the rest, I follow John Deere's schedule.
At you present rate of use, it will be another 6 months until you reach 50 hrs. I would suggest to do the service now. As the other poster has mentioned, you will live with the results.

The break in oil is there for a reason...to allow the rings to break in and seat.

When I got my 790, the salesman cautioned me to run it for 50 hours to allow the break in.

So, I suggest you either wait...or run the tractor more often to get those hours.

After you break the engine in, change per you desires. I change the oil annually or more. Since I only put 60-80 hours on it per year, I think an annual oil change is prudent, after you get those break in hours accumulated!

Our dealer also said that it was important to wait at least 50 hours before your first oil change. Said it was even better to go over rather than under 50 hours to give the rings a chance to seat properly.

Most of us want our rigs to be around for more than a few years so once in a while we need to remind ourselves to follow the correct maintenance schedules so that can happen.

I suggest that you follow Roy's advice, he's giving you good information.

Get 50 hours before the change but do it sooner. Don't you need more seat time /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks for the replies guys, my dealer said about the same, to wait. And you're right about the seat time Bender, but living 30 miles from my project, working a full time job, and trying to keep up with honey-do lists I don't get a chance to excersise the tractor very much. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

The trick is to involve the tractor in as many honeydews as possible. I even used the tractor and a trailer to take down the Christmas lights /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

I remember I asked a similar question here because the oil gets pretty dirty looking on a diesel and I wanted to change it in the worst way. I was a good boy though and waited for 50 hours like the folks on this forum suggested. Well, OK 49 or so. 'bout killed me, running that sooty looking stuff in my new JD!

I you feel you really must change the oil prior to the 50 hours, as I did, just make sure that you install JD Break-in oil. Your dealer should have it in stock. As others have stated, run break-in oil for at least the first 50 hours.
