Well that explains the tree squirrel rules. Before you start buying ammo from out of state, you might want to consider the fact that CA requires non lead for hunting. Don't know if this applies, but would be something to look into before trying to purchase ammo from the nearby states.
You are right about that - back when I could find ammo they would ask what I was going to use it for and when I told them it was for squirrels, they then told me that I could buy one kind they had but could not buy another kind they stocked.

Here ya go ... Pressurized Exhaust Rodent Controller. No need for .410 ammo. Can wipe out 3.5 acres of squirrels per hour ...

Per others who have used it, really only works well in damp soil. So only springtime around here, which is the best time to get ahead of them.

Anyone used the A24 trap for ground squirrels? If so, what bait did you use, and how effective is it?

We are having a record year for ground squirrels and I am not getting ahead of the curve.

All the best,

Peter

Haven't had to deal with those before ..... though my first inclination would be to try techniques/traps for gopher control.

It also looks like the University of California has some (fairly sane) suggestions for ground squirrel control: Ground Squirrel Management Guidelines--UC IPM

The chart of which methods are most effective by month/season would seem rather handy.
Thanks for the lead. Will check that out.

AN UPDATE: I am completely out of shells and no one has any .410 shells within a hundred miles - and I have called them all - they don't have it and won't be getting any either. So the squirrels are becoming a bit bolder. And I have discovered that I am not yet skilled enough with my daughter's pellet gun to be much of a threat to them. I have trapped a few more though.

So, anyway, I finally asked a local dealer about ordering ammunition. He said that they would not order ammunition for me but that I could go on-line, find an ammo company that would ship to California and place an order that would be shipped to them - not me, as they could not legally ship directly to me. Once I placed that order, I needed to go back to the local dealer and pay an "ammunition transfer fee" ($30.00) before the shipment arrived at the local dealer. When it arrives they will contact me to pick it up. They did ask if I had purchased ammo in California before and had filled out the requisite paperwork for that - I had done that - so good to go.

So, I ordered a case of .410 shells and four boxes of 20 gauge shells from Ammo Depot. They were extremely helpful - very easy process - immediate confirmation of everything, and they already had my local dealer on an approved list to receive shipments.

I am getting better with the pellet gun. Added a red-dot sight, sighted it in and just keep practicing. Some squirrels take 10 shots and some 1. A quality pellet rifle may be in my future. No problem finding ammo.

So I used to shoot black birds around the yard with a .410 shot gun. It worked and i was happy about everything but the price of shells. So now I use my 12 gauge with trap shooting shells. I buy them a case at a time and it's about quarter the price of .410 shells. The recoil is very similar. I'm just pointing out another option for your dilemma.

Another trick I learned was to do what I call hide the target. You aim at the black bird and then hide the black bird by raising the barrel just enough to do so. I rarely miss any more. This just might help those who have trouble hitting the target.
