Scott\'s mower won\'t go....

I have a 2001 John Deere manufactured Scott’s mower (S2348). I’m having an intermittent problem. Sometimes, when I crank the mower and let the brake off, the engine quits. If I push the brake back in, the engine will catch back and run. I thought the safety switch in the seat was the problem. However, I hot-wired it and that’s not the problem. Any ideas?

I'm thinking there could be a safety switch hooked to the brake pedal......since you have to apply pressure to the brake for the engine to start....and when you're releasing the brake pedal the engine is cutting out...it sounds like a safety switch is losing contact when you are releasing the brake pedal.

I think that's right. Thing is...I think it's supposed to lose contact at that point. This tells the relay that the brake is off, the other switch confirms the operator is on the seat...so now it's safe to activate the PTO (mower deck). Otherwise, if you activate the mower deck with the brake on, the engine stops. I believe this last part is "as designed" since you can start the tractor, without being on the seat, if the brake is on. However, they don't want you starting the mower deck too.
