I have a Scott's 16 HP lawn tractor with a Hydro Automatic Transmission.

The mower started to make a cracking/squeky sound (hard to describe) when I engage the hydro to move forward or backward. The mower is very slow to respond, it will move, but makes that sound. Someone recommend that I changed the drive belt which I did , but it did not seem to help.

Can anyone recommed what to look for next.

Thanks

Sounds like the hydrostatic transmission failed. If it's one of the later models built by John Deere (later became their Sabre line) in the $900-1400 price range, it has one of the cheap TuffTorq hydro units, and these are prone to failure after a certain number of years. Some googling suggests it has the TuffTorq K-51. That tractor would be at least 14 years old by my recollection, or older, so you have probably reached end of life on the transmission (you're lucky -- some people burn out the transmission in 2-3 years). If the rest of the tractor is in good shape, I'd look into a transmission rebuild kit (generally $300-400), otherwise look into buying a new tractor.
