Scraper vs box blade

I'm having a hard time finding a used box blade but can find scrapers....can you remove dirt with a scraper? I'm thinking scrape to a pile then use FEL? I'm also thinking the scraper may get more use.....smoothing pastures, scraping manure from run in sheds, etc. Thoughts?

Put ends on it and it moves more dirt. But without scarifiers, it won't dig hard ground as well.

Scraper blade also good for ditching and crowning dirt road.

Scraper blades are great for road work , but if you need to move material or level an area the box blade is way better.

I look for used implements all the time on craiglist and most are asking new prices for old rusty junk. You xr can easily handle a 6ft bb.

Interesting question and interesting that you live in MD. I spent 20 years at a dealership in NY where scrape blades(commonly called back blades up there) outsold box blades by about 10/1. Here in NC the ratio is almost exactly reversed. Being as how you're about halfway between I'd say you have about a 50-50 chance of making the right choice!

Look for both box blade and scraper blade when you find a proper one you can afford buy it. i found that new ones were a little more than old ones. Larger equipment is much easier to find used than home owner stuff.

I have and use both;scraper blade used mostly to aid in snow removal but does a fair job on road maintenance.The box blade is useless for snow removal but fantastic for moving large amounts of dirt/stone in dry conditions.It also is better filling pot holes and ruts.

I prefer the scraper, they are more versatile but not all blades are created equal and it requires more practice to master. A heavy 6 way blade can to a lot, coupled with a fel you can accomplish everything. I grew up using box blades but will probably never go back to them.

I'd have to disagree, Ive found the 6 foot box blade perfect for snow removal for me. I can push snow backwards or I can even drag a full load and dump elsewhere. Then use the FEL to move it higher. I added a vertical 2 by 12 inch board on top and welded some 6 wide steel plates for wings on the side, it can picks up a lot of snow wet or dry. In the summer it carries a 35 gallon sprayer tank.

Came up with two advantages over using a blade that I can see. Number 1 is I don't have to get off tractor when using box blade in reverse as nothing to move and biggest is if I hit something, even a large frozen pile of snow, I'm not going to bended anything like I could with a blade.

Pretty much the same experience I've had. For snow, the scraper can be swung so the snow rolls off to either side. This can be forward for lighter snows or with the blade rotated around it also works in reverse for deeper snows.

When we tamed a couple acres adjoining our property back in 2012, I bought a box blade with scarifiers because the scraper wouldn't touch it. When the job was done I sold it.

I just picked up a used scraper. Haven't had a chance to use it much yet due to all the sloppy mud we are having now. I do see where a box could be helpful. Hopefully I can find a good one used....the scraper is an old one and built like a tank! Anxious to get out see what I can do with it

I have 3 scrape blades.
The best one BY FAR is my EA 6 Way Deluxe Scrape Blade.

I have a new King Kutter box blade that I bought 6 years ago.
Have never used it!

The other good thing about a box blade is the extra weight you get with it. My 6ft king kutter is listed at 500 lbs, then add the weighted tires. The blades that I've seen weight under 300. I either have the box blade or the mower always on the tractor.

“Scraper“can mean different things to different people. Some manufacturers make a scarifierless box blade they call a scraper that is used for cleaning paddocks. Dirt scrapers can be pull types that are designed exclusively for moving soil. Rear articulating blades similar to how a motor grader functions are called scraper blades by some people as well.

I think you are referring to a paddock or manure scraper, correct?
