Anyone have any thoughts on a home made screening device for loam or gravel? I thought I remembered reading some posts on this subject a while back but can't seem to find them now. I would like to make something that I could tow around with the tractor. Anyone know how the real ones work?

Thanks,

Jim

Gravel pits sometimes use what they call a grizzly to separate cobbles and boulders from their gravel. All they are is a framework with one end higher than the other and either bars or expanded metal covering the angled part. Just dump your material on and the finer material falls through and big stuff rolls off. I built one out of some wooden poles and we used it quite a bit to screen rocks and roots out of the topsoil we had scraped up when we built our house. A person could build one pretty easily out of angle iron or tubing and put some wheels on one end and a drawbar on the other. Hopes this helps.

the only ones i have seen or heard about had to put up with being shaken by your bucket. given welding and stock, it should be easy. i should be there soon!!!

Build a trough with angle iron and expanded metal. Suspend it at an angle. Attach an air operated vibrator (vibco etc. ). Dump dirt into trough. Vibrate. Larger rocks etc. roll off end. Dirt sifts through. Voila!
I intend to pour a small , three sided foundation on my property, intended for a small outbuilding. I'll fabricate such an air operated screening plant on the foundation. When I'm through screening after construction I'll remove the screener and build my outbuilding.

My dad and I built one 4years ago. It consisted of the slanted Table method, 4'x8', with a expanded metal bottom, and 2"x6" sides in the lower corner we set a plate compactor for a shaker. This worked just fine for ayear and a half. we then sold it to a greenhouse for $2500,and their still using it.

I have made a couple of frames which fit over the garden tractor trailer. Each frame was made from 2x4's and a steel screen with the desired sieve size. Scoops of dirt are put on top, and the shovel moving back and forth seperates the clumps from the fines. An inexpensive solution, along with some excercise...

Does anybody have any other ideas on this topic....as far as vibrating goes? The frame and the screen setup seems simple enough, but the vibrating part remains a mystery.

Maybe the easiest thing to do is hinge the screen at the higher end....This would allow you to use your bucket to bounce the load from the bottom and catch the rocks/roots/debris in your bucket for removal. You could then move to the other side and scoop up the good stuff.

Search for a thread by "LarryB" (I think). He built one & shows pictures with air vibrator. I miss his posts because they were all very interesting & informative. If you can find this post you will see what I mean.

I've wondered and wondered what's happened to Larry. Did I miss something he posted that said he wasn't coming back?
I always enjoyed his posts. I got a kick out of when he got the bulldozer stuck! John
