They are extremely dangerous. If you get a article of clothing or a log that does not go in right and spins like crazy you are dead. Turning the tractor off would be too late if there was a second guy around. Reconsider.

I heard people called them the "Cone of Death"

Farmer's around my Grandparents would use them... it's not a question not working... they do the job OK... they are lacking in the safety department.

I have never operated one. Decades ago when these things first came out the local hardware store had one mounted on the rear hub of a car that was on jacks and was putting on a demonstration. It scared me. The guy had to be careful with his hands. A few logs grabbed and spun. But the guy demonstrating this was in a hurry. He wanted to sell these things. Probably no more dangerous than a large wood chipper with power feed. He did split a lot of wood in a short amount of time. Worst thing about it would be lifting the wood to the splitter. With the new verticals one can roll the wood to the splitter and not pick it up. A real back saver.

hello all thinking of building one of these log spliters .anyone have one, are they very dangerous?YouTube - Kegelspalter

I would add another vote to reconsider the idea..

reasons:
1. just plain dangerous.
2. to be effective I think you need 3 people, one on the tractor, one splitting and then 1 to help handle wood. the third might be optional.....
3. The wood has to be cut to 3 or 4 foot and then split and then re-cut (or at least that is the way I see it from the video).
4. I think this would cause more work than a plain ole gas splitter....

think hard and long...

For me, I just want a splitter..

I think they have a place,on an auger front mounted on a skid steer, thats the only place they are safe.In this day and age I cant believe they are even an option and offered.Just leaving your vehicle running in gear unattended with that thing spinning, wheres the safety, how do you shut it down if its wrapped you up around it.What if a log catches and spins or the car comes off the jacks.Way to many things to go wrong here/

Ya, I am one who hates rules, lawyers, ect. But I am with you and cannot believe they still sell these death traps. I bet there have been a few limbs lost.
