Some of them do look like an accident waiting to happen but there are a several different brands that I would feel pretty comfortable using. I remember as a kid seeing the ones that attached to the car/truck hub ( No thanks!) advertised in the back of outdoor magazines but most designs have improved since then. Last year I considered making one vey similar to this type YouTube - Tractor powered (PTO) log splitter by HyCrack
....personally, I wouldn't have a problem using something like this. If you wanted to, you could weld a V shaped "guard slightly smaller than the diameter of the cone on top of it to additionally prevent potential contact from above and to further ensure no log spinning occurred. Lets face it, felling trees, cutting, skidding logs out of the woods all hold their own level of potential dangers, to me, the type listed above isn't any more intimidating than any of those tasks.

I remember seeing one on a jeep in the late 60's, my grandfather called it "The widow maker". It ran off the PTO and regularly missed the stop, turning into a out of balance prop!
I would rather use a splitting mall than this unit.

I do all of that, felling, (including spars), winching, skidding, bucking, splitting etc and I have to say that those cone type splitters scare the heck out of me. The one in the video is actually one of the better built ones I have seen...... and still, the thought of coming in contact with that cone sends shivers up my spine.

How is a PH digger dangerous? There should not be anyone withing 3' of the thing when its running. I have dug probably 300 holes building 2 barns, 3 decks, and numerous fences and never a single scare. The most dangerous part is getting the thing on and off the 3 point.

Go to the 'safety' portion of this forum and count how many posthole injurys/accidents there have been.
Now count the number of screw splitter accidents.
Some people can't handle a spoon without sticking it in their eye.

My take on the screw splitters is they LOOK more dangerous than they really are. All in the perception of the device.
I'd like to rig one up to sit on the bench, run off an electric motor, and break down larger split pieces when I want some kindling or smaller pieces of firewood. Would beat using the splitting maul on the concrete garage floor.
I used to use one and had no problems with it, or close calls.
But, if'n ya don't like 'em, then don't use 'em.
