so I screwed up and hooked the battery up backwards on our john deere 5310 I'm looking for some ideas on just what I smoked any help would be appreciated

I assume you then hooked it up correctly and are having issues? What does it do (or not do)?

No dash lights or anything? Turn signals?

Sorry to hear it. You are not alone in making that mistake though. Hopefully one of the Deere guys can help out.

Sounds like the ignition switch itself got toasted though if absolutely nothing works. I would expect the signals or dash to work if it was any thing else.

How long was it connected wrong? If just a short time, that is one thing....if a long time the battery itself could also be damaged

just long enough to get smoke rolling from under the hood I back by the dash

Assuming the fusible link being replaced allows the tractor to start, the next thing I would check is the alternators charging output.
Reverse polarity hook up can in some cases damage the main rectifier diodes and possibly the regulator to.

^^true....then you have those computer boards that seem to be in most modern equipment too. In the OP's case, I'll hope the fusible link is all of it.
