I have an odd problem on my property...out of control scuppernong vines. They are everywhere, hanging off of and smothering trees.

Everything I look up tells me how to grow scuppernongs, not kill them. :confused2: What's the best way to eliminate them without killing my trees at the same time?

Thanks

While you are considering the long term strategy, cut the vines off at the ground and either leave them in the tree to die or pull out the ones that won't break limbs. A large pair of loppers should accomplish this task.
You probably have a tractor, so leave enough on the ground/roots to fasten to the draw bar and pull the ones you can get too, out.
I think that if these vines are like most you could keep some, trimmed low to attract the deer.

Duh, I had to look up scuppernong vines!! learn something every day..

I had the same problem when we bought our place, especially in the creek area. All I have done and do is carry a machete on my tractor, when I see them now, (grow pretty fast some times) I will just "wack" them back to the ground.

The ones I have cut that envelope the tree, I cut all the vines and pull what I can as Robert suggested, but generally I leave most of it since it is so intertwined throughout the branches.

I have cut some that are over 8" in diameter, just cutting those kills allot of the upper plant. So far I haven't tried for total elimination of the plant .
