Looks like I spoke too soon. Much colder weather expected next week, we may even get a slight freeze.

This has been about the warmest winter I can ever recall. We have had weeks on end of 70-80*f weather and very few days that stay in the 40-s and 50's. While it hasn't been unusual for us to have warm days in this part of Texas ( Houston area) it's been extremely warm almost all year. We did have about three days late last year that dipped into the upper 20's overnight and a few 40-50*f days but the rest have been high 60's to mid 70's. Today it got into the 80's.

Makes me afraid to think how hot summer will be. I really don't mind our winters and look forward to them after 6-8 months of scorching 95+ days.
If it makes you feel any better: We had 2 warm winters in a row, but the subsequent summers were just average. No really extreme heat to speak of, but they were very dry.
This winter is now cold again for this part of the country.

Weather is fickle & cyclical. People who get freaked out about weather “extremes” usually don’t use a long enough sampling period to understand its variable in nature.

27F with 18 wind chill this AM. Not quite Feb of 2021 yet, but there's still plenty of winter left.

22F with a wind chill of 8F this morning for us. Farrier was supposed to come and shoe horses today. His started his truck that was parked outside to warm up, it died and wouldn't restart. He hadn't put any additive in the tank. I treated everything last week, including the tractors.

How are the horses doing?

All the best,

Warm and snug in the barn with their blankets on. Have heated 5-gallon water buckets in each stall. Outside water troughs froze over. Wind was up to 40 mph when the front came through, down to 20 mph gusts after, thus the low wind chill temps.

Note to self, only talk about winter AFTER winter is over. Hard freeze expected here in SE Texas next week, chance of snow and icy precipitation.
