We currently use Dripstop 940 (920 is fine too) for our tapered thread fittings in the shop. We used to use the Loctite 592, but it goes hard and crusty, which isway too easy to get that stuff in a hydraulic system in a repair shop like ours. Teflon tape is outlawed here, there is none allowed in the building.

Keep in mind that "sealants" don't actually seal your hydraulics, they are just there to lubricate the threads so the tapered threads form a good seal

Well I for one would appreciate the lesson on how to properly use the teflon tape method for hydraulics. I get worried sometimes about the possibility of a piece coming off and getting into a valve.

So what procedure and how much is best ?

Time for a lesson with pictures. A YouTube video would be splendid.

The lesson here is NOT to use it..!!.....You won't see any of my vids with teflon tape..I'll leave that for the "hydraulic amatuers".....

Teflon extrudes both up and down the thread as it is squeezed by the assembly. So ..
* You wrap it on the male, staying 1 to 2 threads back from the end.
* Stretch it so it pulls right down into the thread grooves, and wrap in the direction of the thread so that the eventual outer [loose] end of the tape will be laid down by the drag against the female during assembly.
* Wrap 2 turns and end by pulling hard so it breaks at the connector. If you wrap too thick it will extrude more. I usually start about 1 thread in for the 1st turn and then lay the 2nd turn a little further up the thread -- and, if a third, I go higher still. -- Cheap HF tape is thinner than the good stuf so more turns are acceptable with it.
* Tighten firmly but do not ham fist. Pick your stop point. Do not back up.
* Someday you will disassemble it tho. That will require good attention paid to cleaning all teflon from the socket before re use. I use a small stiff bristle brush, turning it counterclockwise in the socket. It takes a couple of repetitions to get it all out. Not hard to do but you have to inspect to assure you get it all.

OK, I won't Either:laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing:

BUT, a PTFE paste is also good for and recommended for hydraulics, and you can't get it at Home Cheapot.

But you can get it at almost any good sized plumbing distributor

Found this at Lowe's, Oatey Great White Pipe Joint Coumpound with PTFE paste in a one ounce tube. Claims to withstand 10,000 lbs. PSI on liquids from -50 to + 500 degrees F. Made in USA. Is this product acceptable for our tractor hydraulics?

Not for me...I use Locite 565 or Permatex 80632.
