Hi,

After saving up to buy new cylinder liners I am finally putting the engine back together on my JD 401b. New bearings, oil pump, etc.

The liners are wet sleeve type. There are 3 sealing rings. They all seem to go at the bottom of the sleeve. The top of the sleeve has a flange on it which locates in a recess in the cylinder block. I have got everything cleaned out very carefully, and the liners slide in and rotate nice and easy (without o-rings at this stage).

My question is about the top flange of the sleeves. There is no sealing ring or gasket, and nothing is mentioned in the technical manual about the seal at this point. It is just metal to metal with the head gasket following on top. I feel like putting a bit of pipe joint compound on the underside of the flanges before seating them in, or maybe a turn or 2 of teflon tape, but as I say the manual says nothing. Comments or opinions? Thanks.

The head gasket will seal it. No additional sealer required or desired.

Agreed, it is up to the head gasket to seal it. It would be worth your time to have the counterbores measured for proper depth before you assemble the liners. On Cummins back in the day, it was standard to recut the counterbores and shim the liner back up to specs.

Thanks for the feedback. Good to have confirmation I am not missing something.

G'day if your manual does not call for a sealant then don't put any there adding sealant there may cause the liner not to sit down properly giving you head gasket sealing issues.
